Catching up here. Great reports from all. Interesting info about a possible mate in the area. I posted in Harrisburg, that my son saw two bald eagles flying close enough to identify, then soaring on the thermals over the Claymont train station, and his shop. The sky was so clear today. And he didn't have his camera with him. Rats! Alot going on with the birds, and Greg, nice you could have your lunch on the roof. Jane , we too have our banking with Merrill Lynch and I've been in that bldg. You can see for miles around. Kim, if I worked there, it would be hard to concentrate.

The "DEAR HEART" is trying to do what's best isn't she? I hope she gets a chick.

I'm already there with you all! I've been flipping back and forth between Buffalo and Jackson for days! Now that they've hatched, I'm waiting on Lansing and my hometown birds in Mt. Clemens. No camera this year for Mt. C, but the nest was observed today and we still have 4 eggs. Now Wilmington .... so glad to see her come back tonight! Crossing fingers and toes for success here!

Just catching up on the events of the day..(and glad to see Red on the eggs)...lots of good information..and thanks for the link to Kim's blog, Catbird...I really enjoyed reading Craig's observations...

I've given up trying to second guess what is going on...in hindsight, I'm wondering if Craig could have checked one of the eggs to even see if they are viable...but, that probably would have been really intrusive..I think Richmond taught us last year that reclutching can occur, even late in the season...I also think that if Red likes this box, she will stay here...and will bring a male to her...(and here I am second guessing again..)...Just a huge thank you to all with the efforts being made here to help her out...As Donna would say (from columbus), we're learning alot!!!

Two hours ago she was perched on the ledge so her white underparts were highly conspicuous to the north and northeast. Off camera but only two or three feet from the eggs. She was on the eggs a few minutes ago; don't know if she is now. ( I read everybody else's stuff, and I type slow).

A couple of times today she was standing over the eggs and sometimes she bent over, looking at and maybe listening to the eggs.

Pardon the French, ladies, but unless Caesar was firing blanks, I don't see how all of these eggs would be unviable at this moment. Over the past month I just can't remember both of them absent when conditions were even close to harsh.

There's always the very slim possibility that since this is Red's first clutch, that they aren't fertile...I don't know the % of first clutches, but I would imagine its low...I'm the most familiar with the Columbus female...and her 1st clutch was infertile...of course, she's been a great mom since...

I remember reading, here probably, that females breeding for the first time at two years old usually hatch chicks. And I don't think that Caesar was infertile. So right now, I would bet that one or more of the chicks are still alive in the egg.

That said, I'll take a fatalistic attitude (unless one of them is right in front of me to help). It might be better for continuity in Wilmington if Red Girl got a mate this season, and maybe the new male would prefer to slave away for his own genetic progeny than the current eggs. So foster whatever is alive now out to Indiana or wherever. On the other hand, I haven't seen two falcons in the air together, so she hasn't landed a new mate yet. And that tempts me to support the welfare scheme if a chick hatches and she looks maternal enough to Craig and the rest of us.

Thanks for checking the sky, Kim.

There was no Red Girl in the nest either, but she just flew in!

Very frustrating. Thanks Greg for your thoughts on the matter.Hope the nice clear skies stay, to make for good soaring and mate finding.

I have no clue, unless she flew back with a new tiercel and is trying to entice him into the nest box with her. :?

SHE DOES SEEM PREOCCUPIED. WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING THRU HER HEAD THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS. I BET SHE IS STRESSED THINKING, THIS IS NOT HOW THINGS ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK OUT!
