Hate to say it ljames, but I agree. I noticed one being a little quiet in the nestbox yesterday and I'm wondering if it's the same one. The other day, silver boy wasn't very active. Yesterday, I thought it was blue boy.

Can't tell which one this is, but he's smaller than the other boy.

The only way to access the nest is from the roof. As for any type of help, I'm honestly not sure what they would do now that the eyasses are moving round. If it fledged and there was an injury, based on what was experienced in the past, they would take it for vet care. Because we don't know that this little one is even healthy enough to fledge, I don't know what will happen.

I haven't really enjoyed this year very much...at a lot of nests, not just SJ... :-(

Okay...it's blue boy. Clara is over trying to feed now and silver boy is eating. Blue boy has turned around and is at least responding to Clara.

But, the crop doesn't look totally empty, so maybe he's just not hungry? (wish they had a crossing fingers smiley)

OK, so I lied, I am still watching. One chick has the prey right down there beside the one not eating. I believe that it has shown an unwillingness to fight for food right from the start, but it wouldn't even have to fight right now, it's right beside him.

Clara is now feeding the chick, but one that was already finished eating is interested again. FEED THE BABY!!!!

I can't tell that it is actually eating. She is feeding the bigger one leaning out of the box. OMG now it has come down to get the food, baby has nothing.

I think the lack of sufficient food at this nest is the problem, but can't rule out that the little one is sick, but it did look like it would eat for a minute there.

I can watch no more.

Ugh....not expecting to see a problem here. Michele, do you know what's happening with the other nests in the area? It sure seems like there should be enough food.

The other nests are doing very well to my knowledge. They banded Hiko's eyasses (2 boys, 1 girl). SF is doing great.

I'm not sure what is going on at this site this year. I chalked up the loss of the 4th chick to some kind of congenital issue. Now, with blue boy being so quiet?

As I type, little blue just walked to the other end of the nestbox and is now laying against the wall.

I seem to remember last year that all the eyasses used to sleep for HOURS in the space between the nestbox and walls. This was before they replaced with this box.

Let's hope we see him perk up a little later this afternoon.

Michele

Yes, he is at least walking around from one side to the other. I've got to admit, I thougt maybe he was too weak to walk. Well I hope I catch the next feeding to see how it goes. But I am filled with anxiety about it. Probably wouldn't be if there hadn't already been a death here. But this nagging feeling won't go away until I see something positive. Plus the fact that so many chicks are dying this year. I've never seen that before.

I can't get this cam, but from all my times watching nests in past years around this near fledging time...the parents feed the chicks less and less...they do food drops, which is what is starting to happen here. It's a learning stage for them to be able to fend for themselves and a battle of wits between the siblings so to speak. I saw this via cam/pictures in Indy and Harrisburg last year, and too thought (especially in Indy) that 2-3 chicks were being favored more than the other(s), but I got reassurance that that was not the case. If/When they are hungry enough, they will go after the prey and they do so eventually......the chicks learn in varying stages, just like children. Plus they still do a lot of 'lazing' around and will continue to do so until and even just after fledging. The one(s) that hang back at times may not be hungry and may just be sitting in the balance watching and learning. The older chick(s) always seems like they fair better, but the others do catch up eventually...in their own time.

This is what I saw earlier, I was too stressed to post. The little one stayed in the corner the whole time with no attempt to eat. Even when the other chick brought the prey down there and was eating right beside it. The other chick is already in the box full. Trust me, it looked a lot worse while watching and the minutes dragging by.

Then much later, it is in the corner in the box while the other two are flapping. No meals that I've seen since then.

Well, I'm waiting and watching for the next feeding.
It will be really hungry by then, so we will see. Of course, I'm trying to keep track of which one it is, but I am not the camera driver.

Prey brought in and dropped at 4:53. Red and Silver immediately left the box and began to fight over it. Red stood over it flapping for a while, then Silver stole it, she stole it back and they each had a piece. Right now Silver has the prey and is eating away. Little Blue never left the box and is still in the corner.

So I assume the yahoo group and Glenn are aware of this situation? It seems like its getting to the point that they might want to take blue out of the box. It seems like he hasn't had anything to eat all day? That is not good.

Clara has just come over to get the prey. She is feeding Red and Silver. Blue is in the box watching now. I really believe that if she would feed him, he would eat.

I don't know, somebody on the forum said that something might be stuck in it's throat and somebody else said don't make any assumptions when watching birds, that's why they have bands. I'm not sure what that meant. I'm pretty sure I could see the bands. Also said lots of birds that are sick, recover. Some saw it was trying to cough something up. All I know is I have been getting a bad feeling for a couple of days now about one of the males not eating. Today, I'd swear that it was Blue both times and no reason to believe that it wasn't Blue before. Well they might eat one more time today I hope, but I think I'll skip it.
Edit
Besides, maybe it does have something stuck and will eventually get it out. I just haven't really seen that and I watch a lot of birds. But I've seen a lot of things this year that I never saw before.

Thanks for being so dedicated to this ljames. I'm sorry they don't think pulling him out is an option. It seems like they are the right people to help him survive.

I'm not sure they are convinced something is actually wrong, and maybe not, but they wouldn't anyway for fear of causing them to run and jump from the ledge. At some nests they can access them more easily but here they would have to come down that wall.

I didn't realize it was so hard to access. That is a problem. I was thinking that ledge was actually a safer place because its so high, so early fledging was not an issue. Oh well, not much to do but hope for a better day tomorrow.

It's 6:25AM PT in CA. Blue boy is in the nestbox and not moving very much. I just saw him try to get up, but he couldn't. It almost seems as if he's paralyzed in the back of his body. I saw him flap his wings a few times and make some noise and now he's gone still.

I'm sorry to say I think we are going to lose blue boy.

What the parents will do with a older eyas, I'm not sure. My biggest fear is what if he's got a disease or poison? If they consume him, will that be passed on to the other eyasses?

I'm really having a hard time enjoying this season...too much happening at too many sites!!!

Going out on a limb here.

I believe blue boy has expired. Appears it happened between 6:40AM - 6:50AM PT.
