I stopped quickly by peregrine home base today to check on them at around 4:00. Walked out on the bridge and around peregrine square, no sign of them anywhere. Mike checks multiple times a day and has a view of rooftops of all their favorite perches, but has not seen them in a while. I'll will ask my other friends who work in the area to keep a lookout. It sure looks like they've moved to another location. The parents are usually around the area in the off season, so its a little strange that they wouldn't be hanging out in close proximity. Its not a very big town, but there are plenty of bridges across the river in both directions.

Thanks for checking on our falcon family, Barb! I wonder if the RTHs being in the falcons' normal territory has anything to do with them leaving. They might be concerned about the juvies' safety in that area.

Probably the falcons are looking for an easy food source and it could be down river. Plus, we are getting migrations. But the babies are not ready to migrate and you said the parents stick around. My guess is easy food somewhere else. You'll find out where they went shortly.

Nice catch, Kittenface! I guess I'm seeing a falcon perched on that railing on the roof!

As Barb mentioned, I have binoculars here at work and have a clear view of the north and east sides of the top 5 or 6 stories of most of the taller buildings (Federal Reserve, Bank of America, SunTrust, Dominion, BB&T, etc...). However, a few nearby structures fully block my view of the Riverfront Plaza complex (where the nestbox is).

Given Barb & Bonnie's earlier comments that the falcons were mostly hanging out on the south side of the buildings, I probably do not have the best vantage point to catch them at rest other than on their favoriate "Dominion" signage -- which is in plain view from here. Typically, I'll scan the areas around 7:30AM, 10AM, Noonish, 2PMish and about 4PM... and it has been over a week since seeing any falcon activity. About a week ago there was flight around the Federal Reserve building, and one falcon flew up to the SunTrust lettering, but nothing since.

Will report anything meaninful. Cheers all.

This just came in from one of my 'friends' on the Rochester forum:

So, we went to the NASCAR Race at Richmond International Raceway yesterday. NO RAIN was in the forecast - not even on RADAR and it RAINED. For those keeping count that is 3 of the 4 races we had tickets for this year.

Anyway, after we went back to our now cold wet seats, we were watching life fly by falcon and one of the FALCONS flew by! We both saw it and yelped.

How exciting for your friend, Bonnie! Its a shame the races keep getting rained out though. At least there was a reward in this rainout! :rainbow

Joanne, I'm assuming that the falcon is on the right side of the pic on the rail in front of the white dome thing. There is possibly another falcon on the very right side of the rail.

Actually, I thought it was to the left, on the side of the building, appearing to hang off the wall.

Hey Richmond falcon fans,

The 2009 annual report on Virginia falcons is now available online. It includes photos, maps, and graphs.

Thanks for the link to the annual report. I took a quick look at the pictures and hope to find some time this weekend to read the full report.

BTW - That's one beautiful falcon on the report cover.

Thanks from me too Libby! Great success stories on hatching rates here! Also very nice hearing there are two falcon pairs in the mountains, with fledglings. I hope for continued success there.

Bonnie...you've given me another place to look! Actually, much closer to where I live. It is actually a perfect place for training young falcons. Very high, no buildings, almost no activity, and tons of pigeons! I'll be that's where they went. Its pretty obvious from the air too. Its our first week at the beach, and we are right on the falcon migration path. Lots of them coming down the coast now. I will be keeping my eyes open, then off to the racetrack next week.

Sorry I have not been able to get downtown or to the racetrack yet, but someone from the Virginia listserve reported they saw falcons at peregrine square this morning at 8:45. Perhaps I need to get down there tomorrow....YEAH!!!

I went down to peregrine square for an hour tonight. I saw pigeons come to roost on the BBT building. They kept coming for 1/2 and hour. There must have been 100 at least. At 7:00 the sun was going down, and still no sign of the falcons. Driving out there was a HUGE flock of starlings, at least 1000, coming in to roost in one area. Surely that would be a temptation for the kids, but no sign of any falcon anywhere. From the daily bird report from Viirginia, they are saying they leave in the morning and come back at night....but no signs. I have to check out the racetrack tomorrow.
