An e-mail update today:

Our young falcons left the nest early this morning. The male fledged first, followed by the female.

The falcon chick's first flight is the most dangerous and has a very high mortality rate. Both falcons have been spotted on the rooftop of the Westar building (right of the nest box from the front camera view). This is a great place for them to practice safe flying. The parents will stay alongside the young through the summer, in late summer they will head south for the winter.

The winning name combination from the naming contest, provided by Peggy from Randolph, KS is Wes (male) and Star (female).

Linda, our viewer from Richmond, VA has several youtube videos of the falcons first attempts at flying from this morning. Below is a link that shows the female practicing and then taking her first flight.

The front view camera will attempt to get a glimpse of the birds whenever possible.

Thanks,

Nicholas Bundy

Alison, thanks for that info...and what a video...I had no idea they could rotate that cam like that..that was pretty cool. So I wonder, have they actually fledged or are they just walking around on the roof of the building..

Got this today
Falcon Watchers -

A couple Westar folks were able to get on the Westar rooftop yesterday and
check on the falcons. Late last week we had a slight scare and it was
believed that something happened to Doorly. We confirmed that
Hope and Doorly as well as the two young are doing just fine.

Wes and Star continue to learn how to fly in an area that is very suitable
to their needs. Mom and Dad continue to look after them.

The front falcon cam can only view the falcons at certain times and is maintained
by our security folks so it's not able to catch them very often.

We did get some additional pictures yesterday and they have been added
to the existing slide show.

How great is this--they have a whole roof to practice flying on before they actually take off! :thumbegg:

Parent in box/on perch. Juvie next to box & the other is possibly further back in the pic (or maybe they're both beside the box--hard to tell.
