OT regarding Hiko & Haya's family:

Shirley Doell on the SJ & SF Forums:

Quote:
Bad news first; Sausal has been found dead, and her band number called
in. We don't have details, but it appears she collided with something. She hadn't been seen in several days, so we had feared that she'd had a fatal mishap. Likewise, Tilden has not been positively identified for
about the same period, and is also presumed dead, since at this age,
young falcons are usually still dependent on their parents for food.

The good news is two-fold: First, Makya continues to thrive, following his parents on longer forays away from the bridge and making his own
attempts to capture prey. He plays in the air with his parents and is
generally a pest, begging for food and knocking Haya off her perches
when she ignores him! Hiko and Haya have proven to be good parents from start to finish, and their bridge is a good territory.

The other good news is that the loss of
young falcons is no longer a tragedy, as it was forty years ago when the species was critically endangered. The population has now recovered
and new pairs like Hiko and Haya are setting up in territories all
around the world. Fledging mortality is a normal and even necessary
part of population dynamics and natural selection
processes in a healthy population. I know this won't comfort
those of us who are personally very invested in these particular birds,
but we should celebrate the presence of these fantastic birds in our
cities, and thank the people who made it possible.

It saddens me greatly because I was born and raised in San Jose and I have a bond with those falcons. But having experienced great losses of some of my favorites here on the east coast, I can manage.

The saddest part of this is that the peregrines on the west coast have not repopulated as rapidly as those on the east coast. We are blessed here with an abundance of peregrines, but each one has now touched a human in some way due to web cams.

Oh my, I am so sorry to hear that two of Hiko's babies have died. It's hard for me to see the bright side, when 2 of the 3 are lost. Well, of course, I am happy that Mayka has survived and is doing well.

I am so sorry to hear of these losses.
but I just want to state ,that they have only found one.

Radisson at Edmonton, came here from Manitoba. She was not around Winnipeg parents long after fledging and they did not know where she went. So it was a happy surprise for them when she turned up here when she was 2 years old.
so you just never know.

We all form these bonds, and maybe that is why our biologists do not name the falcons, I do not know. WE are all saddened when one does not make it.
any loss is a significant one to me.

Let's hope it's not Evet's window. She would be feeding the falcon. (Bad, Bonnie)

LOL! They have a pigeon smorgasbord just down the street and unlimited use of the San Jose State University Campus with great buildings and trees. No one is on campus for now. My Alma Mater! They know that Bonnie loves them.
