Thanks for the comparison pics, Beth. Unfortunately, they look a lot alike, so unless we can see bands, we can't tell which one it is...not happy to hear that the other male was there earlier. :-(

I see the band on James' left leg is silver, & the shot of a banded male on Tuesday did appear to have a silver band on his left leg. I wonder if James is still around & another tiercel is as well.
:-?

Nice catch of the two. That new falcon does look alot like James, same coloring and markings, I think. Is there more white over the new guy's beak? Well, James is very very old right? Maybe he's not a threat to the other one and no fighting, but don't really know if that really ever happens. How old is Elizabeth? The new falcon could be anybody, but with bands, we will eventually find out and it may be somebody we know even.

They really do look alike...I'm thinking it was james this morning, but can't be sure as I never got a clear look at the bands. Let's just hope james and Green man don't show up at the nest at the same time...

I tried blowing up Beth's pic...didn't turn out too well..

OK, I'm gonna spin a fantasy here. What color bands were used on VA chicks? I'm wondering if this could be one of James' sons & if so, he would recognize his father & not fight him. He would also recognize his mother, so I don't think he would be bonding with Elizabeth, but then bonding isn't necessarily a precursor to mating (as we saw with Polly, Spirit & Roger in Montreal). Or perhaps this is a son of James & Virginia.

How is that for weaving a fairy tale?

Here is a picture of a Cobb chick that has been banded. It looks black/green to me, but Barb & Shawn seemed to think the tiercel at this nest is an out-of-state falcon. :-?

Thanks for the pics yesterday! The one thing I did notice about the mystery falcon is some white above his beak, which James doesn't have. I was thinking offspring too since the markings are so similar. Virginia falcons have a green anodized band on the right leg, as you can see in the Cobb pics. I haven't been able to see the right bands (federal band) on the JR falcon, but Shawn seemed to think that it was not green. Usually they are silver in other places I think?

I got the impression that if a band appears to be silver, its because the band (and therefore the falcon) is very old & the colors have faded away to show the silver underneath. That's probably what happened to James' band that appears to be silver, & also Harrisburg Mom appeared to have 2 silver bands. Her federal band was actually red/black but there is only a little bit of the red/black left on her band, so it appears to be silver. This is just my impression--don't know if its fact.

Here is one I just got of Elizabeth looking at the cam. SGB was probably busy with other pics, so this probably isn't one of her group.

I'm thinking this is the new male, because the band on the left leg is dark.

The white over the beak can be deceiving, too, because one of the ways we could differentiate Lil Dad & Mom is that Mom had white over her beak & Lil Dad didn't. Then all of a sudden, Lil Dad had the white, too! :-? Sure would like to know if that occurs because of aging or what else causes it.
