Thanks, DEF! At first I thought that was James with a silver band, but I think its the other male.

I think so too. It looks more green (and maybe black on the upper part? )

I made a video with screenshots, including a lot of this nest site:

(I also posted this it in a post in the Cobb island topic)

:tearhair
They zoomed in on the leg band(s) of a falcon (the male) and I took screen shots . . . or so I thought. I had not yet activated Irfanview . . . :-(
It is a black over green band and I think in the green was a *G and in the black a *7.
Female was there too, I didn't see any bands on her leg(s).

Thanks Ingrid and Carly! Shawn saw it as well and thinks it is 7/C, but we need to confirm the C. If that's the case, it is a male born in 2002 at this nest (James is the father). He has been nesting very close by (within a few miles I think) on a grounded ship in the James River. His mother would be Virginia, James' prior mate, who comes from the same nest/ parents as Elizabeth in Baltimore.

And that's exactly what I said Carly!

Ingrid, I just watched your slide show on the Cobb thread. It looks like you got some really good shots. Can you see if any of the band can be read with a close up?

If this male is James' son, we can call him JJ (James, Jr.), like we call Caesar's son in Wilmington CJ.

You know this about the fourth site where I've seen a son take over after the father - I know for sure in two of those up here in Canada, there was no fight. Both times, sons nested nearby in their own territory and though they'd visit from time to time - there was never fighting, just an escort out saying 'I'm still here son, not time yet'..so I'd like to think if James has gone then it was simply old age and he vanished on his own and his son has now stepped in to carry on the family line. Assuming of course that this is the case.

James is a magnificent tiercel and he's a record holder so someone will have some big shoes to fill.

I also hope James is still around, Carly--he is a magnificent tiercel! I read from a reputable source that peregrines recognize their parents, although whether that's the case forever or whether its just when they first begin life, I'm not sure. If they do continue to recognize the parents, I wouldn't think a son would fight a father, so hopefully James is still around.

Good to hear about the tiercels in Canada that took over their father's territory without a struggle.

Beautifully said Carly!

It could be a C instead of G. I'm still mad at myself for not having activated my screenshot program . . . it was a good close-up and if I had saved the image we should have been able to make a positive ID.
James may very well have died of old age, he was 20+, which is extremely old for a PeFa in the wild.
And it would be so appropriate for one of his sons to take over the site: "The King is dead, long live the King".

I went back & looked at some pictures of James from June & July, & both bands look dark on cam. Also, he does have a little white over his beak.

WOW...so much going on....I hate to think that James is gone, but to possibly have his son here...that could help ease the sense of losing such a great and noble tiercel...I'll be out much of the day tomorrow, but will definitely put the recorder on the cams in hopes of catching someone...

Thanks for all the info and images. I don't post at this topic often but I have been following all of your posts and have been watching the cam (as much as I can) since I heard of the new male.

James is a very special tiercel to have reached the honorable age of 20 years. My hope is that if he is out there, he relinquished his throne out of wisdom but if not, that he passed gently.
It would be fitting that this be his son.

I will keep an eye on the cams with hopes that I can add an image or two to this story.

OK, I'm gonna spin a fantasy here. What color bands were used on VA chicks? I'm wondering if this could be one of James' sons & if so, he would recognize his father & not fight him. He would also recognize his mother, so I don't think he would be bonding with Elizabeth, but then bonding isn't necessarily a precursor to mating (as we saw with Polly, Spirit & Roger in Montreal). Or perhaps this is a son of James & Virginia.

How is that for weaving a fairy tale?

Maybe not so much of a fairy tale catwoman

 The reason I even started thinking along those lines is that this tiercel looks just like James! :flirty:

Nice catch, SGB! :sfthumbs:

Unfortunately, I'll be gone most of the day so I won't be much help today in trying to get his band letter. As far as I know, I'll be around most of tomorrow, though.
