Thanks for the post, Mick! They obviously gave this nestbox a lot of thought...

No video yet, but this was just posted. (really looking forward to that video)

Dinner is proving hard to find
Posted on 30-11-2010

In the middle of a very wet week in Orange (ref. weather links down to the right) it seems dinner on the wing is proving a challenge. This morning Swift has been quietly sheltering on the microwave dish arm again, away from the worst of the rain, but Solo seems to have been more occupied in the trees. Mid-morning we witnessed a fast-moving Beau fly around past the trees, with a nagging and hungry Solo in hot pursuit (although losing ground to dad on each circuit). She’s visibly bigger than Beau in flight and as yet doesn’t have the strength to keep up. No food was seen, although that might’ve already been sitting back on the peregrine’s feeding branch.

Thanks for the update, Mick! I can just picture Solo chasing her dad to try to get some food. I've seen that many times in Harrisburg. Last year, Red Girl was dive-bombing her dad when he was perched on the stick because she wanted him to hunt some food for her! :o (At this point, it was almost time for her to leave the area, so she should have been self-sufficient!)

I like your story of Red Girl Nancy. I'm so glad that we know her whereabouts- that she has a nest of her own. :P
(Another update tonight, but still awaiting the "Solo getting ratty with flies" video.)

Forever hopeful
Posted on 30-11-2010

We just watched more aerial work by father and daughter over and around the Concrete Hilton and amongst the trees, with Beau leading the way and Solo getting just that bit closer each time, nagging all the way. Beau made for the ledge for a break but Solo insisted on joining him.
Beau took off and Solo found something to chew on from the corner. She’s very inquisitive and much more confident to play over the ledge now (as she should be too).

Solo daring herself over the ledge

Apologies for the spots on the pics. After all the rain there’s a level of contamination to clean up very soon.

Edited to add:
Carly asked a question with a descriptive reply from Scott.

I sure hope our Solo is getting fed!

Hi Carly!
It’s just after lunchtime (human version!) as I write this and there’s some chatter going on in the trees. Swift has been up in the eyrie for a short while (video uploading later this evening) but has headed down to the trees for a look with her offspring. It seems dinner is served. The incessant rain has eased off a bit so maybe this has finally meant some “aerial” food has become available. With the nagging going on I’d say Beau and Swift have no choice but to part with food!! We’ll try to monitor the regularity of meals as best we can out in the trees.

Scott

:winterfun: A couple more videos
Posted on 30-11-2010

More videos available from the eyrie. The first one is of Swift spending some time back home again. She still doesn’t seem convinced by the camera window, even though it’s pitch black behind the camera, but appears to be happy with the other features and furnishings.
The second video is of Solo enjoying a good lunch with a little more action near the end of the clip when she finishes and heads over to the ledge once more. She’s spent most of today trailing the skies behind both parents who look like they’re acting as glider tugs. Solo has clocked up the miles today in between rain showers.

Thanks everyone for all the posts, pictures, videos, and site reports. It's wonderful to see and hear how well Solo is doing!

:sfyesno: "LITTLE MISS MAYHEM"

Everything normal here
Posted on 03-12-2010

Lots of ‘normal’ going on around campus at the moment, which is a good sign. We can tell when food has arrived as Little Miss Mayhem is calling and nagging and letting everyone know. There was also a report from the other day by a staff member that she was seen trying to eat a large pink galah on the top of the tower but had all sorts of problems when it started to slip down the angled roof slope!
Today Solo has spent all morning in the trees with the odd wheeling flight around the tower, with Swift spotted briefly back up no the microwave dish itself. Little else to report so far, which again is probably a good thing. We’ll go for a walk through the trees again this afternoon to see who we can spot.
A new, high-strength telephoto lens arrived for one of our handheld cameras this week but has proven to be a bit of a disaster (i.e. image quality) so I doubt we’ll be able to use it after all.

Rain ……
Posted on 03-12-2010

At the beginning of what some meteorologists are already saying will be the wettest local Orange December on record the peregrines have taken shelter. Storms and local flood warnings are current for all over central and southern New South Wales districts (we’re in the central bit!), which means very little food available for our predators today. They will have to pick and choose during any breaks from the incessant rain.
Swift has taken to her familiar perch against the tower on the microwave dish arm in the lee of the pouring rain but no sight nor sound from either Solo and Beau who will know doubt be hunkering down somewhere in the leaky trees below.
As they say in sports circles, “rain has delayed play” …. (I hope someone remembered to bring in the doormat for the eyrie …)

The rain is depressing

Glad to hear that these falcons are apparently getting enough to eat. The adults probably only need to eat once a day, but a growing girl like Solo needs to eat more frequently! Thanks, Carly! :sfthumbs:

Mention in the local Orange newspaper
Posted on 09-12-2010

Thanks very much to CSU staff member Mark Filmer for his write-up in Orange’s local “Central Western Daily” newspaper today of FalconCam Project in CSU’s regular column, “Our Town, Our University”. Well written, it sums us up at the moment, and the new star Solo takes the star role. You can read Mark’s article by clicking on the picture below: [didn't work!]
