RoseKK, thanks for your report on seeing a falcon where Trooper liked to perch--that's encouraging! :banasan:

Mick, your videos are really great. I'm glad we got confirmation on Durand's bands, and boy she sure chowed down on the prey. It was nice to see them being comfortable so close to each other. Thanks for taking the time to record and edit for us.

You are welcome everyone. :P There was lots of chowing down. I edited 8 minutes out of the original sequence, mostly Durand munching away :loveheart:

I'm glad that you saw a falcon in Trooper's favorite spot Rosekk. :newsnow6:

I was so very excited to see the falcon on the building - I wish I could have stayed longer to watch him. The last time I actually saw a falcon there was a few weeks before the eggs hatched in the spring. It was Trooper. It was getting dark fast so it would not have mattered too much - after about 15 - 20 minutes it was dark. I can't wait for longer days - more daylight to see them - that will take a little while though

which female in the past liked to eat on the platform-Victory? it would be GREAT if they get in the habit of feeding/perching on the platform in front of the ledge like in the past - would give us lots of good looks.

i don't think a female would tolerate another female-period. there is a biological rule about the size of animals - as you go further north they are larger than the same species from more southern latitudes. for example, bald eagles in alaska are much larger than those in ohio. i don't remember what the name of this rule is BUT, perhaps this male is from WAY north which is why he seems "large." durand is from further north--maybe he is from greenland or something. or maybe it is the cold weather making him seem large. we need to compare feet size if possible. feathers puffed out can change a birds appearance but they can't change the size of their feet/legs!!!!

That is sooooooooooo exciting, rosekk17...Its so fun to read when you're able to spot one of the falcons...

Mick....great videos!!! :banasan: I love that he is not shy of the camera...love his little head tilts...Catwoman, you are so right...we really need that nest cam...Trooper's behavior is so distinctive in the box....

Mick, I'm curious as to why you think this mystery bird is female (other than his/her large size)...that certainly adds an interesting twist to the antics on the ledge. I suppose time will tell...I am just so happy that we're seeing some action on the ledge!!! :wavingsnowgirl:

Good idea, Poppy....feet...we'll watch the feet...have we observed any "courtship" behavior? I'm not sure that would even help...

I know last year EC in SJ had a big bald looking spot on the back of his head, which made it easy to tell him and Clara apart from behind. This year he had no spot there, at first. But it came back as the season progressed. :-?

Still, I don't think this is Trooper just looking different. Trooper always had a comical look (expression) that I would notice all the time. But who knows, I could be wrong. This guy made me laugh today for the first time with that little upside down look he gave that prey. Too cute.
Well, at least Durand looks the same and we got to see the bands clearly in the video. :cheer

Thanks for the videos today.

To answer your question SGB, I'm only speculating but a female seems more...er muscular (?) than a tiercel- solid and blocky. At the beginning of this video when the new guy jumped at the food/head, I could get a sense of that musculature- it wasn't fluff. This is a big, strong, (and beautiful) bird. Love the looking into the camera.

I shouldn't have mentioned it. It was just musing between friends.

Sorry everyone :sfwave:

Gosh Mick....why are you apologizing!!!! :shockedsanta: I just wanted to know your hypothesis..since I've missed soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much.

It could just as easily be a female as a male...I just don't know enough about PF behavior in the "off season" to know if 2 females would tolerate each other...especially since Durand has established the ledge as her territory..would she allow another female to visit and not feel threatened? I have Nooooooooooooooooooo clue...I know one thing...since we lost Orville, then Scout( :sosad2 )we have observed and learned so much about PF behavior..(well, as much as we can learn through the lens of a camera pointing down a long ledge.. :banasan: )

I also want to add that I only know as much as I do about these birds from all of you guys here. I am very thankful for every piece of information any of you share!

p.s. Poppy, I never knew birds got bigger the more north they came from. that is really cool to learn. My mom lives in alaska and always tells me that my crows and ravens are tiny compared to hers! that has to be why!

I agree that Mick should not be apologizing. We should all feel free to "muse among friends" as Mick so aptly put it. So, muse away, everyone!

Oh, I just remembered another distinction between males and females. Can't remember if I read it somewhere or if Richard from Indy told me. A male's wing tips typically are longer than his tail when in a tucked position. A female's wing tips typically are about the same length or shorter than her tail in a tucked position. A male's shorter tail (in relation to wing tips) allows for more speed and maneuverability in flight or while hunting.

tooooooooo many to name you all.
just thanks to every one. for the musings. and the videos. and the pics. and the tales of sightings. and the sharing. the companionship that comes from our love of these gifts to us...the lives of these magnificent PF.

we've lots of activities going on. on the ledge. and close by as well.
and many mysteries yet to be solved.
I don't think my eye is sharp enough to compare feet. but that is a grand idea!

as I've said before, we have a flock of home chickens in our yard. they change from molt to molt. and from season to seaons. and also as they mature. They are banded otherwise I wouldn't be able to keep them all straight. and as we do our own breeding, it is imperative to know who is who and how each is related to another. and which I'd prefer to continue in my breeding program. the rigors of Mother Nature do the culling of our PF. my point here is that as the 2nd PF is not banded it is difficult to identify him (her??). I would guess....with a very limited amount of experience...and most of that based on chickens....that the PF other than Durand is a male. a new pullet/hen in my yard (improperly introduced) is under attack even from "domesticated" hens.

I, also, did not know about birds in more northern latitudes being larger. fascinating.
this group is a fabulous gift to me. thanks so much.
and Merry Christmas!!!!

Thanks for the picture Mick. I can't get FF to open right now to see the cam. That male looks huge in that shot.
