:sleigh: Hi ljames. Yep, the visitor is the one closest to the cam.

Durand left at 1:23 and the visitor followed after her. This pair is so comfortable together, almost serene.

Here's a video of the visitor with a good close-up for wing tail comparison. Thank you for that good tip Susan!

EDIT: I notice at arrival, the visitor picks at some pigeon head crumbs from yesterday.

Wow, I loved that video!

I am fairly convinced this visitor isn't Trooper. a) bigger in size; b) slightly different coloring and c) different behavior. This new visitor loves to peck at the camera on the ledge and it cracks me up every time.

As for male/female...if it's a male, it's probably the biggest one I've seen. The wing tips do look like they extend past the tail feathers though. It's a puzzler!

Thanks for the video, Mick! I did make note of the wings to tail feather proportion, & this one's wings are shorter than the tail feathers, which would typically make it a female. :shockedsanta:

Visitor arrived, left seconds later.

Image

Durand hauls prey to ledge, leaves but returns and walks to cam. She out of site next to cam right now. Prey is over by the back wall.

Image

Edit : The visitor then arrives to consume D's prey. She is still off-cam. Visitor just left. @ 3:03

Here is the bit, after Durand brought the unconsumed prey and walks over to cam. This is before the visitor arrives and consumes her "gift?".

(Edited to replace pBucket video with YouTube version)

Note to Carly; please correct me if I got any of the Canadian info on the YouTube description wrong :P

And, finally, this is a stacked screenshot for size comparison. Visitor is at the top and Durand is at the bottom.

Thanks for the great video, Mick...too funny...I recorded the exact same event (your first video)...got side tracked..and never got it uploaded...so glad you caught it too!!! :sfcheers:

I don't know what to make of all of this...other than, I'm pretty sure its not Trooper...now, whether its male or female..I'm not even gonna try and figure that one out....I've watched and rewatched the video to try and compare wing to tail..its making me crazy.. :shockedsanta: ..but its great fun speculating!!!

OhioWatcher...its really great to see you!!!! :snowmancarrot:

Just a quick visit by our Mystery falcon...

At first, I thought he was going to go into the box...but, nope...when he left, he buzzed the ledge, landed by the cam and started pecking it...then left and is on the next ledge...

Thanks for the pictures and videos today guys! That other falcon is HUGE!

I notice how they hang out together on the ledge. I don't think I have seen that before since I have been watching the cams.

Thanks for the nice videos today. This falcon is interesting, how smart you are catwoman to know that wing to tail feathers thing.

I see them hang out but not go in the box together.

Finally got the cam up just in time to see a really big bird fly from left to right and up toward the other ledge. It really looked too big to be a falcon, but I guess it was. Just a few minutes before I could see someone's tail sticking out from the other ledge.

Mick I hope you don't mind that I borrowed a couple of frames from two of your videos to compare foot sizes of Durand and the unbanded falcon. Since both were taken from YouTube videos, the source size is equal. In other words, it is a comparison of "apples to apples."

Durand on left, and unbanded falcon on right

Thanks for the welcome everybody. It was a little surprising at first. I check this site at least once a day and I feel as though I already knew you all, LOL. I am an avid eagle watcher, but when I saw this site I fell in love with these falcons. I grew up a couple of hours from Columbus which makes this even more fun.

Looks like the visitors feet are a little smaller than Durands? Does that mean anything?

Oh, I just remembered another distinction between males and females. Can't remember if I read it somewhere or if Richard from Indy told me. A male's wing tips typically are longer than his tail when in a tucked position. A female's wing tips typically are about the same length or shorter than her tail in a tucked position. A male's shorter tail (in relation to wing tips) allows for more speed and maneuverability in flight or while hunting.

Susan posted this wing-to-tail proportion info & I'm just bumping it up! Thanks, Susan! :snowmancarrot:

Oh Susan that is such a good comparison! :rudired:

I am NOT goin' out on a limb and say what I think...

I'm happy that you joined in the discussion OhioWatcher. As you know, tiercels are smaller than falcons. Durand is a big falcon. If I remember right, Carly mentioned that Durand and her sister were really big when weighed at banding (2009. Durand is from Canada).
This visitor seems really big for a male, so we are making wing tip to tail, talons and body size comparisons to get an idea of how big.

Love, love love these birds.

WOW...genius idea, Susan...well, either Durand has really big feet...or her feet are normal size and the mystery falcon has small feet...

I'm sitting here laughing hysterically...if an outsider just happened to stumble across this forum for the first time, and read our posts from the past several days...well, you get the picture...wing tips, tails, feet, growing em big in Canada.... :laugh
