Clara is feeding the chicks, but she has the prey sitting right on top of the poor little dead chick. Oh lord, if they don't remove the little body, we're going to miss the entire season in pictures.

I just don't want to upset anybody with pictures. Well I've accepted it and moved on but it is harsh to see.

Here are a couple of closeups of the 3. They are hungry and getting plenty it looks like.

I know...

There seems to be some interest in baby (like they are looking at it and moving chicks away from it). I thought for sure one of them would have removed baby by now.

Has anyone ever seen this happen at another nest, and what was your experience? I saw it in Utah in 2008, and Dad removed each eyas several hours after it passed. Never left them in the nest.

Australian-Frodocam, Brisbane
The last year they had the cam Michele we saw a parent remove a
passed chick...It was almost like a funeral

Edited-I think it was 24 hour timeframe that it was removed

I'm so sorry Michele, Nancy, and ljames that you have witnessed this sad event here the last few days. Having lost a whole clutch in Richmond the first day of hatching, I know how heartbreaking this is to watch. I think we are all a little spoiled having so many successful nests the last few years with 4 chicks fledging. I'm pretty sure the national average is still less than three. Four is a lot to raise, and five is incredible.

I think in Australia it might have been a few days, and it was an incredibly moving event as Beth mentions. I'm sure they won't leave it much longer.

Thanks obxbarb.
I saw video or a slideshow on the Australia chick. I think Froona had posted it somewhere. That was pretty much a crime as I think it died of sun exposure as there was no box. :-(

Sorry...can't post this on the forum...if anyone watched (I literally just tuned in at 12:08PM PT), was #4 just consumed and the head removed. I'm sorry. I don't mean to be gross. I think I just saw Clara leave with the head..

I really don't mean to make anyone sick. I just thought it would be removed. I wasn't prepared to catch what I think I just saw.

Reminds me of the Netherlands Owl nest in 2008.. 4 born, only 1 makes it to fledge.

EDITED>>> I think ljames saw the same thing.. Another member confirmed obervation..

EDITED#2>>>May have been EC, not Clara.

I am so sorry you guys had to see that. Maybe Glenn can answer some
questions about why it happened? Food supply low?

Michele:

I did not witness what you you saw, but I really think the adult just left with the wee one and you just saw the head. remember it was very little and it had been dead a few days.
could the adult have been jsut getting a grip on the whole the thing and the head was what you saw hanging out.
I am sure this was the case. Could I be right??? the reason I say this is because I watched the Owl over at Shandy remove the dead young one after a few days. it nudged it gently around bit and then it mouthed it to get a grip and then flew off with it.

How are the rest dong now??

Hey Bev - Are we talking about San Jose?

If so...several members observed the same thing. I caught the last bite, which went to a chick. I had to look 2 times and make the screen really big because I was sort of shocked at what I was seeing and thought it was my imagination. At the end, the remainder was removed, and I'm pretty sure it was the head. Don't peregrines normallly decapitate their prey?

I'm know ljames saw something and even commented that this was more than just a bit. I'm sure more info will be posted.

Very interesting. I can't stop saying I thought it would be removed.....Not consumed.

Yes, I saw the whole thing too and it was shocking to say the least. EC fed part of the remains to the chicks and then removed the head from the nestbox.

For Owls it is normal to eat their chicks when they die. Storks do that too, heck, they even eat the smallest chicks alive (Have seen it once).
Never heard of Peregrine Falcons do it however. Didn't see any of it, as I wasn't on-line this weekend, but my guess is that it was the whole body but because of the angle it may have looked like just a part.
In 2007 in De Mortel, S2 removed the remains of the dead chick, a few days after she took up her role as a stepmother.
And I also remember the failed nest where the newly hatched eyases died almost immediately and were removed rather quickly. And, as already mentioned, there was the incident in Brisbane.
There too the parent removed the dead chick eventually.

I was thinking that maybe they consumed the little one if prey was
not available... Wish our falcon expert (Froona) was still with us.

Hi Dutch Eagle Fan..

This just happened at 12PM PT (4/19). Unfortunately, #4 was in the nest since time of expiration (it was pretty evident at the 7:20PM-ish feeding on Saturday, 4/17).

As for storks, I think there was a video of that last year on Beef de Lente.

ljames - sorry you had to see the whole thing...but at least you were able to confirm what I thought I saw. I just couldn't believe it at first. I had just hung up the phone, looked over at the computer and WHAM-O.

Okay...on to, hopefully, good times at this nest.

At the owl nest I observed(great horned owl) it did not consume chick, just removed it. Very touching. I know other owls eat their young(that i8s why I do not watch barn owl)
Well, I did dot see this this morning, but peregrines do not do do this. And you said they put the prey right on the dead chick, so it may have been bits of prey that were fed to chicks . I am still thinking that whole body was removed and you just saw the head. the only other scenario ,I can think of , is it got mixed up in the prey

I watched a feeding this morning where the prey was on top of the dead chick and Clara was feeding. It's possible there were still leftovers there, but I don't think so. I was watching the feeding just a little while ago and saw a part of white being fed to the chicks. I thought, wait a minute, and moved in for a better look. The camera also zoomed for a minute. It appeared to be the chick he was feeding them and not leftovers. He picked up what was left (the size of a head, but it could have been more) and left with it.

I took a screen shot of that and maybe the feeding too, can't remember, but I'll look to see what I have. I did not plan to post it.

I would not mind seeing that ljames becasue as I said peregrines do not do that. and the chick could have got mixed in with some of the prey and they realized that in time and removed the chick.
I cannot find the cam site, by the way

Hey Bev...

Here's the cam link. They changed some settings at the beginning of the season, so all my old links didn't work

The following post was on the Yahoo Group:

Quote:
I watched Clara looking at #4 and then pulled it towards her. She then
started with the feet.....eating them. Couldn't watch anymore..........

We know now, based on several members viewing, it was EC

Unfortunately, lots of SJ forum members saw the same thing and posted their observations as well. bev., if you like, send me a pm with you email and I'll send you the two pictures that I have, although, the feeding one is not easy to see if you were not aware of the position of the dead chick prior. As soon as I saw it I thought, great can't take any pictures because didn't want to have it in my shots. It took me a couple of minutes to realize what was going on.

I would doubt they will post a video of it, although, I'm sure they have one. We'll see. Can I send a picture through a PM?
