Rachel, Echo, and Cade are on the ledge (left to right). You see a bird flying in from the left (6:00), which turns out to be Andy. What a champ! He moves over to the corner and the camera zooms in for a minute (8:15).

rachel did a sloppy fledge but she is safe

rachels awkward fledge( courtesy of Jim) ( 4:30 mark)

https://youtu.be/24Vzo7ims08

report from th e ground
Rachel is on the east side of the PG&E building (spotted by one of our canyoneers). She's on a window ledge 6 down from the top, 6 over from the right.

it's not at all unusual for them to land on window ledges on the side of the building. Typically they gather their wits and take off again, landing on a nearby roof, but she may hunker down there for the night.

We have watchers on the ground who are keeping an eye on her.

Thanks, Bev. I was watching the series of this flight to the right, and then flight to the left. If I knew she was going to take off I have watched longer. :clapegg:

bar gave me permission to post . thi s was from yesterday and last night. there are 3 flying at present. 2 come back to nest . Rachel has also but no one saw her. read report to see

When I arrived this morning, Rachel had flown from her PG&E night roost window and was nowhere to be seen. At 12:30pm there were two juveniles on top of PG&E and Echo and Cade on the nest ledge. It had to be Andy and Rachel (who we had seen fly in from the direction of Spear Tower) on to the top of the building.

All was quiet until a little after three when Andy was seen on camera flying into the nest area. Now we had three fledges in the nest area and along comes Rachel, flying into the third bay and pancaking on the ledge (unfortunately out of sight of the camera). The camera confirmed three on the nest ledge and we could see Rachel (or at least her backside and tail) on the ledge.

Between approximately 4:00pm and 4:20pm Andy flew to 201 Mission and landed on the roof in a spot where Val often sits, furthest from PG&E

Then things got crazy and close to 4:20 pm Cade decided it was time try again and he took off and flew to 201 Mission and landed on the roof closer to PG&E. The things got really crazy as the two boys played a little leap frog on the 201 roof and then flew off landing on the building catty-corner to PG&E. We call this the pyramid building because the mechanical room is a big metal pyramid shaped structure that takes up most of the roof area. There is also a ledge around the perimeter of the square building. One observer saw them land on the roof but they didn’t stay long. By now it was 6:20pm and with three fledges in the air all going in different directions it was almost impossible to tell who was whom.

On thing we know for sure is that by 7:00pm Andy was back with Echo and at 7:40pm Val decided to fly by the nest ledge with prey in talons. This caused Andy to come out like a shot and chase after her toward Beale St. They got into a little midair wrangling and when Val attempted to pass the prey to Andy, he dropped it. Val retrieved it midair and continued around the back of 201 with Andy first attempting a landing on the 201 roof, then PG&E, and he was finally found on the Beale St side of 201 in a rooftop balcony that is three floor below the roof of 201 Mission.

And not only was Andy there, but there was another large juvenile who may have been Rachel. There were also signs of prey remains so now we have another spot that we need to keep an eye on. Luckily there were four of us there tonight, but it was confusing trying to pull together what we are seeing from the ground and what is being seen on camera – where band colors and/or numbers can be read.

We left it was getting dark, with Andy and Echo on the nest ledge, one juvenile on the east side of PG&E, and one unknown.

This is not going to get easier with four in the air in the coming days, but the attempted prey exchange by a 4 day fledge was priceless.

Posted by Jim in SF PGE Group:

"Yesterday the San Francisco Fire department rescued Rachel out of the water at the Embarcadero, under the Bay Bridge, and called Craig Nikitas of Bay Raptor Rescue. He brought her home, dried her off, and kept her in a dark quiet place overnight. He took her to WildCare this morning, and she was given a clean bill of health after being x-rayed and given bloodwork.

He's on his way to PG&E to return her to her the nest area.

Jim"

She should be released around 12:45pm PT.

report from barb for yesterday

Today was a very quiet day. We did not see Cade today, but it is common for the young to lay low for a day or two after fledge. Cade of course was the first re-fledge and is probably resting up after his second flight.

And as you heard Rachel had a little adventure of her own. It turns out she was only 3 blocks away as the peregrine flies and about 5 human walking blocks. One correction to the initial report is that she swam to shore and got herself up on to dry land where she was picked up by the San Francisco Fire Department. It turns out that peregrines are able swimmers so she was just using a normal peregrine skill.

As everyone saw she was released in the early afternoon near bay 10. She was wet down to deter flight and she immediately jumped on to the ledge to dry herself and preen her feathers. She moved from 10 to 9, then to 7, and finally 1 where she reunited with Echo.

Then Rachel and Echo sat, moved from bay to bay and sat and sat.

Andy was the only one we saw fly. He was on top of the building when I arrived and at one point joined his sisters. It was a similar flight to yesterday except there was no prey involved. Val began flying circles and figure 8s around the PG&E building, first at lower levels and out of sight of the young before she did one sweep from east to west across the front of the ledge and Andy followed her, landing on top of 201 Mission. He perched peregrine style for a while, pancaked for a bit, and flew back to the nest ledge.

From Jim’s report a meal was served at 8:00pm and we hope everyone stayed put for the night.

Barbara

At least 3 there. One's trying to self-feed.
