I have had the night to mull over.
Can’t place blame, here. It is nature and we are not privy to all ts intricacies . Bridget has been great. ( 3 males, and eggs even pipping is great) She was a great mom to Solo last year. Loved following Solo. This 2 year old male has stepped up in so many ways. And he started bringing prey :15heartbeat:
So I think back to one of my sites. Bell. A few times in various seasons a male has carried out an egg with a formed embryo. We cannot see closeup like this site. But I remember as I was a bit taken back. But it was deceased.
So the difference here, was chick was still alive. Maybe they knew something we did not

Let us remember how privileged we are to be brought into their lives. To see them at their best and worst moments.
So I am taking my own advice and continue to check in and wish them well for rest of season.
:15heartbeat: :15heartbeat: :15heartbeat:

It looked to me like she might have started incubation with the third egg. Sometimes its hard to tell when they are incubating and when they are just keeping them in the warming tray.

Although Bridget did her best the incubation was spotty at times. In addition to maintaining the proper temperature (around 99 degrees) incubation also is about maintaining even humidity (about 50%). If the levels are too high or too low it can affect oxygen transfer through the shell, make the egg shell extra hard, or even affect the membranes inside the shell. Apparently many instances of pips without hatches are a result of "shrink wrap" where the hatchling sticks to the membrane and is prevented from turning in the egg. We don't know what factors ARE involved with the Wilmington nest but we do know that incubation was not ideal.

I am in and out watching.
But watching male, with the chick, poking it and lifting it a bit, I really think , because he is 2 year old, first nesting, he does not fully understand.
So let’s cross fingers here. He was picking a bit at pipped egg.
Bridget kept coming in and out with prey, but did not interfere with him.
Hoping for at least one and maybe he will learn along the way.
We all think, that everything comes naturally, but not in all cases.
Watched so many nests where female taught male and vice versa.
Bridget is not teaching, but maybe she will yet.
If he had been here from beginning, things might have been different
Stay optimistic

Here is the Bridget feeding the first hatchling of 2024 in the Wilmington nest. Another egg is pipped and peeping so we hope for a nestmate to join soon. This is the first experience with eggs for foster father Stewart. The baby daddy disappeared after the eggs were laid. Incubation was spotty and the first two eggs that pipped failed to hatch.

tottaly agree, father instincts are not there cause she probably did not even copulate with him or not quite too much to make him thinks that chicks and eggs are his and improve father instincts.

finger crossed for wilmington and bridget chicks from Poland

I saw them male in the nest, he looked at the chicks and
kinda pick around them.
He was back later with food but when she tried to take
it he left with the prey...

Sorry for the red line
