Very sad that another koala was burned, but I'm glad she was found & is being treated. I also hope she survives!

Birds in serious decline after prolonged drought
ADAM MORTON
http://www.theage.com.au/environment/bi ... -h915.html
October 22, 2009
AN UNPRECEDENTED investigation of Victoria's bird life has found it is collapsing,
with two out of three woodland species in significant decline.
The 12-year research into native species found that generations of land
clearing and more than a decade of drought linked to climate change
has reduced numbers for more than 80 species.
Those affected include the laughing kookaburra and species of honeyeaters,
thornbills and lorikeets.
Deakin University ecologist Andrew Bennett said he was cautious about
blaming climate change, but the decline in the state's centre and north
might be ''what we have to get used to''.
''Clearly it shows when we have sustained change in rainfall and sustained
change in climate it is having a marked effect,'' he said.
''In this case it is on birds. What is concerning is that we don't know
what's happening to other groups - to reptiles, to mammals, to invertebrates.''
Professor Bennett said that the report underlined the need for
systematic monitoring of wildlife.
''When we have a financial crisis we put vast resources into it.
But we have a biodiversity crisis and nothing happens,'' he said.
''There is some good restoration and revegetation by landcare
groups and others but the scale of what we're doing doesn't match
the scale of the problem.''
A State Government report last year warned Victoria has the most
devastated landscape in the country.
More than half of all native vegetation and 80 per cent of private land
has been cleared since European settlement.
A land and biodiversity white paper explaining how the Government
plans to tackle the crisis is due before the end of the year.
The bird research, published in the journal Diversity and Distributions,
brings together the results from three long-term studies surveying
across 30,000 square kilometres.
It found the fall in numbers was as great in remaining woodland
areas as in cleared landscapes, suggesting that current reserve
systems alone were not enough for species to survive as the
climate changed.
The decline was most dramatic over the past five years as food shortages
increased and breeding nosedived. Professor Bennett said red ironbark trees
- a major food source for nectar-feeding birds - had hardly flowered in five
of the past eight years.
''One of the things that concerned us is that it's not just threatened species
that have declined, but also some of the common species like
laughing kookaburras, red wattlebirds and grey shrike-thrush,'' he said.
Victoria Naturally Alliance, a collection of eight environment groups, said
the state was facing an ''extinction crisis''.
CSIRO has reported that 30 per cent of the state's animals and nearly
half its plant species were threatened or already extinct.
''There is a critical need to improve the quality of existing habitats
and restore habitats, especially in more fertile areas adjacent to existing
bushlands,'' alliance spokeswoman Karen Alexander said.

Thanks for posting that article, Kittenface! When are people going to learn that cutting down all the trees can cause an environmental disaster? They finally figured out that destroying our Everglades was a disaster & they're trying to reverse that!

Gosh KF - thanks so much for finding & posting that whole article! :shock I hadn't even seen it in our news here ... yes indeed it is quite noticeable even here in the suburbs of my country town - the decline in bird numbers - that's why I get so upset when I see people allowing their cats to roam free - cats have devastated bird (& small marsupials) numbers ever since they were introduced into Australia - there are local laws that state that cats are to be kept indoors at night but not many people seem to adhere to them - and even in the daytime they are hunting - last year I heard a terrible commotion in my backyard & went running out to find a cat had attacked the beautiful big magpie mother - she just got out of it's grasp but lost most of her tail in the process - she never visited my yard with her partner again  so I am pretty vigilant about always shooing cats out of my yard so that the birds can have somewhere quiet & safe to feed & sit in.

What a weird environment Queensland is experiencing - fires & also floods - and whereas the fires have harmed a LOT of wildlife inc. koalas now the floods have created a massive increase in the budgerigar numbers, due to the increase in grass seeds - here is an article I read just now:

And here is a very good home video of a big swarm of budgies (even though it is in Western Australia it would still be pretty much the same as seen right now in the Queensland areas):

AUSTRALIA - Record $525,000 fine for
Esperance Port over lead pollution
... had killed thousands of birds

http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0 ... public_rss

UPDATE: ESPERANCE Port Authority has been fined $525,000 over lead
pollution that poisoned children and killed thousands of birds.
The Esperance Port Authority pleaded guilty in the Kalgoorlie Magistrates
Court in July this year to five charges of lead contamination and one
charge of emitting a nickel odour.
Magistrate Greg Benn handed down WA's biggest penalty for pollution
when he sentenced the port authority on Friday in the
Esperance Magistrates Court, imposing a fine of $525,000 plus costs.
The contamination occurred nearly three years ago in Esperance,
about 740km south-east of Perth.
Thousands of birds were reported falling out of the sky between
December 2006 and March 2007, prompting an investigation into the
cause of the deaths.
Charges were laid following a parliamentary inquiry in 2007 that found
undetected lead dust had escaped from the port when lead carbonate
from Magellan Metals was loaded onto ships at the port in windy conditions.
The port had faced a maximum penalty of $1.3 million.
Department of Environment and Conservation director-general
Keiran McNamara said the successful prosecution was the result
of a comprehensive investigation by DEC investigators with wide
support from the Esperance community.
``The community can draw confidence from the fact that since this incident,
the department's capacity to regulate industry has been greatly improved
by the allocation of significant additional resources in the monitoring and
compliance areas.''
A five-year monitoring program in the Esperance region which started
in 2008 continues to track the levels of lead in the environment.
A number of children were found to have high lead levels after the pollution
contaminated the townsite.
The port authority, now known as Esperance Ports Sea and Land (EPSL),
reiterated its apology and regret for the incident after sentencing on Friday.
EPSL acting chief executive Neil Pearson said the port accepted it did not have
effective environmental procedures in place at the time of the contamination.
``Although there was never any deliberate wrongdoing by anybody at the port,
errors were made and we have accepted our share of responsibility by pleading
guilty to the charges,'' Mr Pearson said.
``The port acknowledges and apologises for the concern our actions have
caused the community and our staff.
``This penalty is significant and the board will now need to consider the
impact it will have on the port.''
Mr Pearson said efforts had been made to clean up the Esperance townsite
and the port, as well as improve its operating systems and equipment.

These were posted on an Australian Tourism Website and the answers are the actual responses by the website officials, who obviously have a great sense of humour (not to mention a low tolerance threshold for cretins!)
