I'm posting this from the SJ Yahoo Group. Glenn Stewart's visit to City Hall today.
I took my own advice and visited the 4th Street garage this evening. Fernando "the rocket" put on an extraordinary show by dominating the windy airspace five blocks to the east and five blocks to the west of City Hall for quite some time. Most of the time he was but a speck in the sky that slipped in and out of naked-eye vision. In a significant moment, he encountered another peregrine one thousand or more feet above the city that was non-aggressive--they merely passed momentarily and the third bird carried on out of sight.
I saw Clara leave the nest as Nancy reported above--it seemed abrupt and she left paddling at full tilt to the south and disappeared behind the MLK library. Soon enough, she returned with a small food item and consumed it on the louver.
By contrast a pair that I watched in a wooded canyon last evening was very active until it was too dark to see. The waterfall at the head of the canyon provided a different backdrop than City Hall, but at both locations, the flights were extraordinary. I recommend a City Hall/4th Street garage visit to all. --glenn@scpbrg
I really appreciate how he provides info on peregrines who nest outside of urban areas. Also, confirms why Fernando got his name Fernando El Cohote.
I'm really starting to have a little girl crush on this tiercel. When I read about him flying around fast, makes me think about the flying shows Dotca is doing in Rochester.
