Hungary hobbie falcons

Quote:
One chick has left the nest, but is safe. On the afternoon of August 15, 2021,
several observers reported that one of the chicks had fallen from the nest.

At 2:16 p.m., the larger chick spun on the exit and lost its footing and then its balance,
sliding onto the L-section iron under the exit. (This iron has an edge of a few centimeters,
so when the chick spreads its wings and tries to move, it slips.)

Around 2:30 pm, one of the parents was just coming home with the prey.
Then the chick started moving on the L-profile,
slipped off the edge and fell out of the camera's view. The parent bird flew after it.

We informed colleagues near the scene, who were at the mast fifteen minutes after the incident,
searching for the fallen chick.
Fortunately, neither feathers nor chick were found,
suggesting that it either sailed into a nearby row of trees
or became entangled in the now towering corn currently being planted in the area.

(The lack of feathers suggests that it did not hit the iron fittings and was not caught by the fox,

which is important since foxes are common in the area and visit the area below the nest during fledging season.)

In the meantime, the parents had also started searching for the chick,
so the colleagues left the area, confident that they would find it and bring it food.

This incident occurred before fledging, but even the chicks that fledged in time
continue to be fed by their parents for weeks after they have learned to fly and hunt.

Our falcon expert will be on site today and we hope he can confirm the facts so far.
We will keep you updated here as well.

We would like to thank the many viewers who contacted us immediately after the incident
so that we could respond in time.
We are happy that so many people think our bird conservation activities are important and support our work.

Little one has conquered the front bar...flapping,
jumped towards the iron bar in front of him and fell down!
Sorry I couldn't snap a 2nd photo in an 1/10 sec immediately but
saw the falling chick with opened wings between the iron bar under the perch...
and it was gone.

Hungary hobbie falcons > new report from Ragadozomadar-Facebook website:

Quote:
The fall of the chick #1 as seen by the expert.

Our expert watched the video of the chick's fall and concluded that, unlike the smaller chick, the larger one was so advanced that it was able to sail 400-500 metres after the fall. This meant that it could fly down to higher plants, either in the tree line or in the cornfield, where it was not threatened by any predators.

If his parents continued to look after him, in 2-3 days his wings would be so mature that he could fly up the ironwork of a post on his own. He didn't see the chick on the site visit either, but he could hear its voice and see that its parents were keeping an eye on the area, bringing prey to the site. He confirmed that there were no feathers either near or far from the pole, meaning that he had not been hit by a collision and no predators had found him. The nearby fox nest is also uninhabited, having been abandoned by the fox family some time ago.

The fledgling, which is expected to fly back to the nest within days, will presumably fly back to the vicinity of the nest as it is attached to its sibling and the parents from whom it receives its prey. There is no need to capture him, as he was lucky to fall out of the nest and is strong enough (it would be difficult to capture him in the corn anyway). On the other hand, even if we did succeed and put him back in the brood box, he would most likely fly out again because he has been through it and would have no trouble.

Once the chicks have fledged, there is nothing to tie them to the nest because their parents can feed them anywhere and they no longer need the security of the brood box. Within days, we will go out again to observe the column's surroundings and report back on what we have seen.

Hungary hobbies: Good news and pictures from Fleur:

2x a parent falcon appeared in the nest and lured the runaways calling with prey.
You can regularly hear begging calls from the surrounding area and the big one didn't hesitate for long >>
twice he returned to the nest and greedily took over his breakfast.

After all perfect start from the front approach bar!

Hungary hobbie falcons - Here's an update from the MAVIR Saker/Hobbie Facebook forum:

The little one seems to be doing well and has apparently also safely emerged
from the cornfield under the power pole again. I'm sure we will see him again soon,
as soon as hunger drives him by the luring calls of the hobbie parents and his sibling hobbie.

:toast
Quote:
The 2nd falcon chick has fledged. On August 18 at 9:21 am the second chick left the nest.
Unlike the previous chick, this one is more likely to have fledged, as it does not lose its balance
when looking back at the camera images, but jumps away from the overhanging beam.

After signaling the chick's departure, our observers returned to the site and searched the area around the power pole.
Fortunately, no injured chicks or dead feathers were found, indicating a collision or encounter with the fox.

They did not see the chick, but they heard its voice coming from the cornfield.
The parents circled the area looking for where it had landed.

Meanwhile, an observer reported that the young returned shortly after fledging, around 12:45 p.m.,
circled and landed in the nest, and then moved on again.
Our Saker expert will be back on site to report on this as well.
