Redwood Queen's birthday was on 5/11/21 making her 23 years old! From VWS:

"Join us in wishing Redwood Queen (190) a Happy 23rd Birthday!
Hatched at the Los Angeles Zoo on this day in 1998, Redwood Queen is a dominant female in the flock having raised a combination of nine biological and foster chicks since 2007. Redwood Queen has proven time and time again that she is a smart, resilient, and caring condor who is held in high esteem in the Big Sur Flock. We wish her a happy birthday and many more to come!
Now...anybody know where to order a carcass cake and candles last minute?"

:7val: Condor #943 has recovered and been released back into the wild!

Ventana Wildlife Society
6 hrs ·
Condor #943, the juvenile bird originally spotted by viewers on our Big Sur Sanctuary Condor Cam with an aluminum can lodged to his beak has returned to the wild this week!
After initial capture at Pinnacles National Park (PNP), #943 was transported to Oakland Zoo for rehabilitation after biologists discovered he was also suffering from high levels of lead poisoning. Watch his inspiring story below!

Video by Oakland Zoo.

Oakland Zoo:

Poor Condor 943 just couldn't catch a break. First, biologists at Ventana Wildlife Society noticed him on their webcams with a can stuck to his beak.
Staffers at Pinnacles National Park Pinnacles were able to remove the can but detect high levels of lead poisoning in his bloodstream, so he was brought to Oakland Zoo for chelation treatments.

We are soaring with happiness to announce Condor 943 was successfully treated and released back into the wild at Pinnacles National Park!

 Here's an article about the California Condors in Smithsonian Magazine by: Franz Lidz, photos by: Jak Wonderly.

"Rising Again"

(This article mentions that Iniko had a leg fracture, but as far as I know from what we were told by VWS, it was not fractured.)

:eggthumb: Both Redwood Queen and Phoenix were at the sanctuary this morning. Below is an old FB post by VWS and video of a bear feeding at the sanctuary and what they did to deter it from making this a habit and a FB post from today on "It's Endangered Species Day" with a magnificent photo by Tim Huntington of a California Condor.

"Black Bear at the Big Sur Condor Sanctuary
This black bear is the first documented to feed at our Condor Sanctuary in Big Sur California since we started the effort over twenty years ago. Bears are not common in Big Sur so this sighting was quite unusual. We regularly provide still-born calves to help newly released condors get established and to reduce lead exposure to older birds from feeding on "wild" carcasses that were shot with lead ammunition. Since we are not releasing young condors in Big Sur this year (6 to be released in San Simeon later this year) we temporarily stopped putting out calf carcasses to encourage the bear to move on! We loved seeing this bear on Condor Cam but did not want to habituate it to the site."

Black Bear at Big Sur Condor Sanctuary on 8/26/19. Please note the title below the video published by KTVU Fox 2 San Francisco is misstated as the bear does not eat a condor, but one of the calf carcuses they put out for the condors.

"It's Endangered Species Day! Did you know that in 1987 the last wild California condor was taken into captivity after decades of population decline?
Currently, thanks to conservation efforts, the once nearly extinct bird is now part of a robust free flying population that can be spotted up and down the California coast!
Have you seen a condor flying overhead recently? Let us know!"

"Do you know why condors sometimes look black AND pink?
Juvenile condors (3-4 years old) can be identified by their black coloration and gray feathery fluff on their heads. As they get older, condors begin to lose their dark coloring and extra fluff. While it may look strange at first (or even like an injury), these dramatic color changes are all a part of growing up!
Can you differentiate between the adults and juveniles on the condor cams? https://www.ventanaws.org/c... "
