suncats_AEF (Moderator): Romeo returns at approximately 9:55 am with what appears to be a Needle Nosed Gar fish. He does not eat the entire fish, leaving it in the nest. Hmm?

I can't see the Gar... interesting, still no mention of crack/pip/movement. Nuttin' Honey! :imbored:

Thanks for the updates... my PC (or NEFL cams?) are still acting up a bit.

I hope Missy doesnt eat it!

:furious: SPOKE TOO SOON!!!

suncats_AEF (Moderator):
11:06 am The female eagle A2 returns, gulps down the fish Romeo brought for the chick,
then flies after him. A lot of vocals during this time. Romeo was really pissed off!

Great pics loza

leigh_AEF (Moderator): Good afternoon. After a confusing 30 minutes of the cams being up and down Romeo is now back on the nest incubating the eggs. Thank you for your patience through all of this we are all doing the best we can to understand what is happening.

4 pm

RRP Lisa asked if an eagle stept on hatching egg

I replied
Did she step on it this afternoon? Today?
I heard a loud kerfuffle but was AFK

3 pm Romeo standing over eggs screams repeatedly
scream, whistle, sharp - not a sound I usually hear from an eagle
He is looking around all over, as if desparate for his mate

I didnt know what sound that was. Did she kill the chick?
Some hope the eggs dont hatch - it'd be too difficult

Dec 22, 2:48 PM
aka_AEF (Moderator):
A very large unidentifed, most likely female eagle appeared on the nest and stayed until 3:14 then it flew. Romeo flew back to the nest at 3:15. An eagle appearing to be A2 flies to the nest at 3:30ish stays a few minutes and Romeo flies away. She follows him. He returns about 3:36.

Maybe thats what you saw. 3 females all after Romeo
I hate to think it - but Romeo's screaming may have been lamenting the chick that wont hatch. I dunno, just speculation. I dont mean to be negative but the situation is negative.
I want to record reality as accurately as possible.

4.30 pm
For the record, there appeared to be a little blood on Romeo's RIGHT talon, it looks a little skinned - like a skinned knee. Could be from prey

Seriously bad cam troubles - hope to fix tomorrow

Thanks Loza. You and I were watching at the same time. That was A2 in the nest. Before she arrived, there were vocals heard off cam. Something was going on, as Romeo was craning his neck back and forth to track what was happening. Another female in the area? A2 eventually arrived at the nest out of breath.

Romeo appears more comfortable with her today, to the point that he was preening while she sat near the eggs. He occasionally vocalized toward her. She balled up her feet as she approached the eggs and aerated the nest around them, but she has not gotten to the point of actually incubating. I don't see any pips, but Romeo did get up at one point this evening and looked down at the eggs for a while, as if listening. If they hatch and A2 stays, I hope her instincts kick in and she doesn't eat everything in the pantry. He is going to need some help.

Cams still wonky

aka_AEF (Moderator): There is limited stream, keep refreshing.
Due to internet issues, cam ops cannot zoom. We are all frustrated

1:15 AM debistl_AEF (Moderator):
The young adult female stood in the nest napping & watching Romeo incubate
She incubated from 12:48 am until approx. 1:30 am, aerating 2-3 times.

jd_AEF:
3:30 am Romeo sleeping soundly in the nest and the young adult female is perched nearby.

jd_AEF 5:06 am The female watches over the eggs, Romeo perched
5.40 am loud vocals from both

4.30 pm Dec 22 For the record
there appeared to be a little blood on Romeo's RIGHT talon, it looks a little skinned - like a skinned knee. Could be from prey, could just be a skinned knuckle

My concern with Missy is twofold.
Will she eat food Romeo brings - she did on Dec 22
Will she eat chick

Furthermore, how can he go get prey for himself and protect chicks - especially if it rains?

Ferenz - Thanks for pics! :15heartbeat:

Romeo brought in another fish that A2 took from him. I pray these eggs do not hatch. A2 will eat everything. This nest has become an easy banquet for her.

8.30 am Romeo leaves Missy with the eggs - and she eats the fish again.
Her tail is tipped in brown so she is a 5 year old.
Missy has definitely claimed this nest and male as hers.

11.15
Yeah Nadia I saw her take his fish
It is normal for a male to gift his chosen female.
However, I seriously doubt that is Romeo's intent.
Romeo is a lover not a fighter. He wont fight for his offspring.
He shd chase her off for filching fish!
In all fairness she has no idea its for the chick(s)
She thinks he is gifting her

I was absolutely sure I saw chick moving a piece of eggshell.
I dont believe I was imagingin it
I am quite frustrated. Now I see no movement

Thanks Ferenz.

Shep...no one knows Romeo's intent with the fish deliveries. It could be to stock the pantry or it could be a food gift. However, based on observations over the last 2 days, it appears that any food brought to this nest will likely be taken by the new female(s), whose hormones are not in sync with rearing eaglets. As a matter of fact, this whole thing started on 12/11 with a food delivery to the nest for Juliet. This morning AEF is not even sure how many females are visiting the nest. I am with Bev, I hope these eggs do not hatch.

The NEFL event log is very informative. There are apparently 3 females in the area. The feeling is that this territorial battle occurred due to Juliet's age, which made her a target for a younger female to displace her. Romeo and Juliet are at least 16 yrs old or older. Their true ages are not known and Juliet could certainly be older than Romeo. The grounds crew is still searching for her. Several reasons for her absence are indicated in the log. It is noted that to date, there have been no signs of courtship from Romeo with these females at the nest, but AEF does not know all that is happening off nest and out of cam view. I tried to copy some of the log here, but the AEF website would not allow me to do so. It is worth a read.
