Lil Chief Sam and his Missy
Peace in the pine at last

January 29, 2019
cam 1 down, cam 2 sluggish

Overnite: Jan 29, 2019 jd_AEF (Moderator)
2:30am A2 (Missy) and Samson enjoy a dry and calm night of sleep
3:00am Both move into the nest, then
Samson returns to branch and Missy preens in the nest

4 am Both tucked near each other
4.45 am Both begin singing. Wow, thats early! Missy is rooting in nest.
I'd hope for an egg if they were bringing in fresh grasses. The old must be moldy.
She moves from nest to branch by Sam
5.20am More singing by both, close together on branch

:15heartbeat:

I believe we have our pair!
Sweet Sam, son of R&J, and his Missy
He and Missy seem comfy with each other
This is Sam's natal nest
Missy was fed fish by Papa Romeo so she feels ownership

Both are quietly rooting around in nest together
They are behaving like a pair. Its so cute!
:15heartbeat: They even kissed Jan 28 - LOL!

Another day or 2 and I'll believe the fighting has ended
AEF NEEDS UNDERWATER CAMS!

January 2019 has been eagle chaos as I have never witnessed!

Cast
Samson, son of Romeo and Juliet, hatched in December of 2013
Missy (A2) claimed nest after Romeo fed her fish before he left.
- She has an obnoxious squawk and a distinctive frequent audible shake
All month many male eagles have come and gone

Thanks for your pics loza and Ferenz

:rainbow :wave

2 pm AEF posted - Samson arrives
That bird resembles the one I called Specks.
Do some of Sam's dark spots appear and disappear?

6 pm Both Sam and Missy came screaming into the nest.
I didnt see anyone, but I guess they did
Defending nest together. VERY good sign.

Cam 1 is working - sort of - and yes, has ps on lens
Sound is popping and crackling - they're workin on it

" Hmm. . .at this time we have an eagle that arrived approximately 9pm as seen tucked on Cam 2 and partial view on Cam 1. It's not Samson, but we can't identify if it's A2 with the IR (and a tuckee!)."

Lil Chief Sam and his Missy
January 30, 2019

4.30 am I see Sam and Missy perched
4.40 am Vocals from both, chuckles, sqawk
5 am More vocals
5.15 am sharp Missy squawks
Doesnt she ever SLEEP?

The eagle I called Specks January 20 was Samson!
He was at nest with Missy several times
Sometimes his specks on his head are less or more apparent.
They make a nice pair! They'd make R&J proud! :15heartbeat:

:thanku Loza. Looks like Samson and A2 are becoming a bonded pair. Keep in mind that he also mated with GF. Loza's video looks more like bonding behavior than actual mating. There was no coital contact. At this time of year, I think it unlikely that A2 is entering a fertile period and doubt there will be eggs here, but it would be nice to see these two stay together at this nest.

:taz: There are 2 eagles present, neither are Samson or A2!! This has been reoccurring all afternoon! One is lying in the nest and the other is on a branch. Switching gears, I too agree that it is unlikely for eggs this season, however the window for that is not closed in this area. But, it is fast approaching.
Victoria in southwest Florida (Eagle Country) laid her 1st egg about 48 hours ago. Their nest was destroyed in late December and they had to rebuild. I do think it was @ least an attempted mating whether it be for bonding or the real prize! He looked a little high for a "cloacal kiss" as they call it, but if there was not contact, @ least he has improved. I know there were @ least 2 attempts with GF with one of those attempts finding Samson in the backward position per AEF. :teehee: For me they need to work on a nest bole, bring in some sticks/branches to reinforce the nest and railing and defend their nesting territory. Obviously, they have done none of this so far. But, I continue to celebrate their achievement of this morning and hope others do too!! :flirty: :sum9:

Edit to add: for guests here that may still be learning as I always am. This excerpt is from a Raptor Resource article, to help explain what a "cloacal kiss" is. I remember learning this while I was a member in earlier years here and was amazed because things didn't happen quite as I thought they did! :teehee:

How are eggs fertilized?
Both male and female bald eagles have a cloaca – one opening (also called the vent) that serves as the bodily exit for their digestive, urinary and reproductive systems. During the breeding season, the cloaca swells and protrudes slightly outside the body, while during the rest of the year it is much less prominent. When birds are ready to breed, their reproductive organs – the testes and ovaries – swell and produce the sperm and ova. Male birds store sperm in their cloaca until an opportunity to mate arises, and females will receive that sperm into their cloaca before it travels to fertilize their ova. The cloaca is on the rear of the body under the tail, and covered by feathers on the extreme lower abdomen.
Copulation
Contrary to some stories you may have heard, Eagles do not mate in the air. We have observed a few instances of mating in the nest, but most often it will be on a high tree branch near the nest site. The female will bow her head and raise her tail, and the male will clench his talons as he gently mounts and balances on top of the female. She will then move her tail aside to expose her cloaca to his reach, and he will arch his body so his cloaca can touch hers while he totters and flaps his wings to stay balanced. The brief rubbing of cloacas as they touch face to face may last only seconds, but the sperm is transferred quickly during this “cloacal kiss” and travels up the oviduct to meet her ova for fertilization.

I do not know for sure, but Samson may have arrived landing on a branch with the interloper in the nest. He circled above the tree crying out in an aggressive manner, but landed on a branch and so far has done nothing further. Cam 1 continues to freeze and again I can not be sure this is Samson.

Edit to add: Probably not Samson, but the one that has been in and out with the dusty headed one all afternoon. Someone ate their "Wheaties" this morning. I wouldn't want to face off with that one!! Stay safe Samson and A2!!
