:1val: Samson and Gabby are at the LY tonight!

Nov 18, 4:55 PM
jd_AEF (Moderator): Both fly off 5:53 pm and we hear sweet vocals in the distance

Nov 18, 6:11 PM
gretchen_AEF (Admin): MONDAY TUCK-IN: Although it's comforting to know Samson and Gabrielle are roosting at the nest at night, it's also a comfort knowing where they are. They are very close by. Many have heard their vocals from the LY where they frequent and where they often roost. All is fine in the pine(s), as the tree they are roosting in tonight and every night when they are in the LY, is a healthy pine. SED Samson and Gabrielle and all that love on them.

:buzzybee: Am seeing some talk recently of the reason there is a delay in eggs (from what is normally seen here) from Gabby could be because she is a northern eagle (some think d/t her larger size) with a hormonal schedule conducive for those areas and others cite newly mated couple. I have some excerpts from articles on the latter.

From Catalina Island Conservancy, "Eagle-Eye for Romance"

"Bald eagles are capable of breeding from about age four, but new pairs, especially younger ones, sometimes either don’t breed or fail to lay fertile eggs on their first attempt. Breeding, laying, hatching and raising young is not easy, and it sometimes takes practice before beginners can get everything right. But once they do, things normally go according to plan."

From U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, "Eagle Facts"

"When it begins to mature at age 4, an eagle seeks a mate and establishes a
territory. The territory is usually located within 250 miles of the nest where the eagle was
hatched. There, the new pair of eagles will construct their own nest but often don't produce eggs or young
during their first year as a pair. They'll return in following years to raise young of their own."

From LiveScience, "Bald Eagle Sex: The Acrobatic Mating of America's National Bird"

"In some cases, new bald eagle pairs may not mate their first year together, instead spending several years in a particular location, possibly to assess each other or the nesting area."

And here's the "TUCK-IN" with the added declaration of we are on "egg watch" here:

Nov 19, 7:33 PM
gretchen_AEF (Admin): TUESDAY TUCK-IN: Samson and Gabrielle were perched for some time at the nest this evening, and right before chat started they flew. They made their usual "b-line to their ST in the LY and arrived with sweet vocals heard all the way to the nest microphone. I'm sure they will be heard during the night at some point and surely in the morning. We are patiently on "egg watch" leaning on many unknowns. Whatever is to be will be. SED to all!

:sum9: Apparently, Samson brought a fish to the nest earlier this morning that Gabby flew down and claimed 5 seconds later!! I think this is a first for him!! They spent most of the morning here!

Nov 20, 9:29 AM
cyn_AEF (Admin): Samson off at 10:30
Nov 20, 9:39 AM
cyn_AEF (Admin): Gabrielle switches to LookOut Point
Nov 20, 9:41 AM
cyn_AEF (Admin): Gabrielle off to find that rascal Samson at 10:42

Edit to add: Nov 20, 5:39 AM
jd_AEF: 6:38 am Gabrielle arrives at the nest
Nov 20, 5:41 AM
jd_AEF: Samson joins her in the nest at 6:41 am

Edit to add: Samson had eaten a part of the fish before he came to the nest with it!! So, probably a gift for Gabby, even though he did try to get more after she had it and that was a NO as far as she was concerned!! :teehee:

gretchen_AEF (Admin): WEDNESDAY TUCK-IN: jd_AEF has it right. . .Samson arrived in the LY first with "adult" vocals and followed by Gabrielle. They exchanged sweet vocals. They actually landed in a different tree, but by now, they are likely in "their" ST. Either way, they are close by and likely to be heard and seen at the nest in the morning. SED to our resident eagles and to all

:buzzybee: Nobody home for now.

Nov 21, 6:03 AM
jd_AEF (Moderator): 6:52 am Samson and Gabrielle arrived together in the nest. Samson has moved to Wallenda.
Nov 21, 6:07 AM
leigh_AEF (Moderator): Good morning everyone! Samson flew at 7:02. Gabrielle is waiting for him to return to the nest.
Nov 21, 6:18 AM
leigh_AEF (Moderator): Gabrielle moves to the Sunset branch to look for Samson at 7:17.
Nov 21, 8:24 AM
cyn_AEF (Admin): After several large crop drops, Gabrielle moves from the Sunset branch to LookOut Point. Still waiting for Samson to bring her breakfish
Nov 21, 9:22 AM
gretchen_AEF (Admin): Signs to look for if Gabrielle is in labor: Prior to labor she will spend more time at the nest and in the nest. Gabrielle will be somewhat hunched over and appear to be supported by her wings. She may appear restless or rock a bit. She may vocalize softly (well, maybe not softly for Gabrielle!) and/or she may slightly open and close her mouth repeatedly. She may ps in the nest. Her back feathers may rise, and her back spread out some. These are the observations we observed with Juliet.
Nov 21, 9:25 AM
gretchen_AEF (Admin): It's not too early or too late in the Florida nesting season for eggs. Although most breeding pairs in Florida lay eggs in November and December, it has been documented that eggs can be laid as late as April (although very rare).
Nov 21, 10:04 AM
cyn_AEF (Admin): Samson arrives at 10:36. Both Samson and Gabrielle fly off together at 11:04

gretchen_AEF (Admin): THURSDAY TUCK-IN: It's always a bummer when our stars vacate the nest during chat. BUT it's also nice to know where they are! Moments before chat started both Samson and Gabrielle took flight and made a bee-line to the LY where they roost many nights. Ground crew, Glenn, and I tucked them in, and I'm sure they will be heard at first light (or before) and likely arrive at the nest early. SED to our sweet eagle pair and to all!
