:girlsad3: California Condor #63 "Junipero" a single father at this point raising chick #1077 was noticed to have a foot injury of some sort a couple of days ago by cam viewers. Earlier this afternoon a close up was obtained and it is a very significant if not catastrophic injury/condition. It looks to me as if an amputation is the only thing left to do at this point, but do not know if condors can tolerate that and survive. There seems to be exposed bone proximal to the left ankle with gangrene distally. When he travels on the ground, he is hopping on the good extremity and is not using the left as a stabilizer. He seems to be capable of flight. Nobody has seen him eat or drink that I am aware of, but I have seen him perched on the rim of the watering hole and I did see when he was near the carcass this afternoon, start to reach over to pull at, but changed his mind before making contact. VWS response to cam viewers on the 13th, then below that is a screen capture from the afternoon of the 14th by Cali Condor:

Hi Viewers,
Thank you for the reporting on Junipero's (#663) limp. We have Biologists in the area trying to locate Junipero to get a better look at his foot. It's difficult to say at this stage if he's injured or if he has something stuck to his foot. He is currently rearing a wild chick (#1077) as a solo parent so it's important we get a better look at his foot before we make our next move.
Thank you again for your keen cam observations, we greatly appreciate the support.

Dear Friends of EC,
Happy fall to all Friends and viewers!
As most of you are aware, Nic and Vic, our resident eagles, did not return to the nest last year. We were all surprised at the turn of events and we miss them with you and simply trust that they are alive and well on their adventures elsewhere.
What did happen last season is that there were many visiting eagles as well as some territorial disputes. After extended and numerous visitations, we even started calling it our “EC Bed and Breakfast Season!” However, after several weeks, it became clear that there would not be a settled pair.
At this point, due to that fact and other extenuating circumstances, we have made the decision to pause our viewing season until we have confirmation of an established couple taking over the nest.
If or when we have that confirmation, we will go live and bring you the good news! Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Junipero Update
Hi Viewers,
A follow-up on Junipero's (#663, purple tag 63) injured leg/foot. He showed up briefly yesterday afternoon and stuck around just long enough to get a close look at his left leg/foot with the cam. Based on the footage, a condor team veterinarian confirmed that necrosis has taken over his lower leg and foot. As to what caused this, we can't determine that from the photo alone, possibly a bone break, but hard to say. He showed up again this afternoon and actually drank water and fed on a carcass briefly before he was flushed off by Shadow. We were able to get additional looks at his injury today and it does appear he may have signs of a bone break, again, not completely conclusive at this stage.
So this is a call to action for all condor cam watchers to keep an eye out for Junipero. Continue to post photos and provide details about his behavior, it's such a huge to help to us.
Despite his unfortunate situation, Junipero is still flying quite well and we even picked up his radio signal toward his nest site earlier this week. Junipero doesn't appear to be emaciated at this stage, which is very encouraging. As you know, wildlife are amazingly resilient and can overcome serious injuries in the wild and find ways to survive.
Junipero is currently rearing a wild chick (#1077) as a solo parent at an extremely remote nest location in Big Sur, so that makes his situation even more difficult. Chick #1077 is almost 6 months old and should be fledging any day now.
Current plan- The Pinnacles team is on standby and will be ready to trap him in the event he shows up at their release site. We will continue to track his movements very closely in Big Sur and keep baiting the feeding site in hopes of spotting him on the cam.
Big thanks to beabee Cali Condor

:15heartbeat: Junipero has not been seen since Friday morning the 17th at the Big Sur Sanctuary (he could be seen standing beside a carcass at that time, but did not eat), however they picked up a signal showing Junipero was "toward" his remote nest site yesterday the 21st. Update from VWS:

:eggthumb: Radio signal picked up again yesterday from Junipero. Update from VWS:

Ventana Wildlife Soc Mod • 5 hours ago
Hi everyone,
Good news, Junipero (663) was picked up by radio signal yesterday toward his nest site. However, he has not been observed on the cam recently, so we have no new information on the condition of his injured leg. We are encouraged he's still moving around and that could also indicate he's finding wild sources of food for his chick, #1077.
Keep your eyes on the cam, he could show up at any time!

Ma, from Berry eagles, was spotted at yet another lake, by Atlanta yacht club. Warms my heart to see this. She just knew her time at Berry was up. There will never be another, like her. So never give up on eagles and falcons etc. That are displaced. So many , know , when their days of nesting are up. :7val: :7val: :7val:
