Rain is good..Hard for a wet falcon to fly for the first time. When they have to do rescues at Harrisburg (and maybe other places too) sometimes they will wet them down after they put them back on the roof...not only does it cool them off, but I think the theory is it slows them down so they don't fly immediately after the roof return..at least that's what I read..LOL

So do you think they will NOT try to fly when it's raining ...or will it be safer if they DO try?!
(Last year, I walked around my house for 5+ days with my laptop waiting for an Osprey to fledge! I didn't miss it - but :girlcrazy: :girlcrazy: )

I've never done it. I DID see video of a rescue
need a blanket, sheet cloth to toss over bird - and a box to put bird in.
I'd think garden gloves - my opinion
If you can make the - E-CHUP - sound it'd be nice - hahahaha

I sure have seen how fast Koppie may go over the side! What a temper!
He is so sleek and ready! I wouldnt put him back if he goes over - but thats just me

Just think - koppie could fly off today! :egg14:

Im not a falconer but I play one on tv ... kidding

Just my educated guess...if its a steady rain, I doubt anybody will go..drizzle, mist or long periods of no rain? Somebody could go...or it could be days...They have a long, nice ledge and aren't cramped..The one thing I haven't seen (and of course, I would need to have the cam open all day long) are parent fly bys, especially while carrying prey.

Its not good for them when raining because surfaces are slick. The catch 22 is when its raining, they get excited and there always could be an accidental fledge or slip..2 of the 3 Columbus kids fledged accidentally. Storm was careless flapping so crazily on the edge and we assume that Flash went the same way in the wee hours of the morning..

OH SKY!
I saw the GSB parents flyby to encourage theirs to fly this year!
Once Rusty went down Michele wanted all the other 3 down too.
It was soooooooooo cool to see them buzz the kids!!!

I am seeing the Baltimore parents in the sky luring the kids
also the traffic copter but the kids arent tempted by that :egglaugh:

I am way far from being an expert and I've never done a rescue. I think the rule of thumb (at least what I was told to do) was to keep the grounded bird safe. In other words, out of the street, people away from it, etc. until the appropriate people arrive. I was never trained in rescue so, I would never attempt one unless the bird was in immediate danger, like being in the middle of the street, etc. Have I rescued injured doves and other birds outta my backyard? Yep..with a small towel..and it wasn't pretty...LOL

:teehee: I've seen the traffic copter too and the occasional plane pulling the banner..

If they ground, they have no choice but to return them someplace high. I doubt it would be to the ledge unless the other kids were way down at the other end. Last thing they want to do is scare the others off the ledge..

Thank you Thank you Thank you...
I can't make it down there today - but I'll plan on being there bright and early (rain or shine) tomorrow morning (and probably Sunday). Since it's Friday, i.e., workday, I'm sure 'someone' is there watching (I Hope!) ...since there's been a 'family' there for so many years, don't you think SOMEONE will be there? I just don't want anything to happen to these little(?) beauties (how did they get soooo big so fast!) :flirty: :loveshow:

I have not been here in a bit due to my stuff but wow.

they are ready already :egg13:

Main thing is to make sure you know who to call. Take a big towel or tablecloth with you. A box ( a cat carrier box works well) . If you feel it is in danger, you approach slowly and quickly throw cloth over. Take gloves. the thing about picking them up is their wings ,fold them down , in a downward motion , as you pick up and place them in box . the cat carrier boxes have a handle. you never want to use a cage. the wire wrecks their wings. you can spray them with a little water.

if you are going to just watch it and keep safe:
phone your number right away, and keep young one safe. slowly approach if necessary, and try to keep it backed against something. keeping people away is key. They do more harm than good. Do not take pictures it scares them. save those for when they are rescued.

If you loose track of one after it fledges. watch parents. and listen. when it is hungry it will call.

I am thinking positive things here. hopefully there are some who are watching them

Excellent advice, Bev...you've done this so many times, you're the pro!!! WOO HOO..

I do think phone numbers are MAJOR to have at all times...

I remember when Flash (Columbus) finally left her low level "home" and glided to the lawn of the State House across the street. It was a little after 7 am..I swear, Rosekk must have been first on the scene and found her and called me..I remember telling her to call Donna..long story short, she didn't have the correct number in her phone. thankfully, the Grounds manager arrived and called the emergency OhioDNR phone #..but, guess how Donna found out...yep...she read it on BCAW FIRST...before the operator got through to her on the phone..yea baby.. :dancinggirls: we rock!!!

Thank you all so much!!! (of all the people here - the 'dumb one from Maryland' is going to the site!!!) :teehee:
Another question - Do the chicks EVER fledge successfully? I mean fly off, land on a roof somewhere, then return to the nest??? Do they ever fledge all together... like 'follow the leader?' (Oh Jeeeeeeeze.....)
(I haven't been able to watch - but everytime I've checked... the nest has been empty! ...and the sky is getting very, very dark at an Osprey nest in Baltimore that I watch!)

YES!!! Go thru this blog of the Atlanta falcon nest!
http://www.raptorresource.org/forum/ind ... 30.75.html

The juvies fledged and kept coming back, flying thru the area
Also the GSB kids fledged and return. They didnt all fledge the same day, but did the same week.

Thank you, Shep - What a gorgeous nest area! Is it a private balcony (do people live there or is it a business?) I read where the (WL Cam people) have to guess which balcony they put the cam in... The falcons get such great practice before they fledge! Beautiful! Thanks again!

bon got the pics - I got the notes! LOL! What a TEAM we are here

7.15 am The boy gave up on the bird. There it lies and he left it. He did a good job for a juvie.
4.45 pm Koppie and sis just showed up. A parent appeared then vanished and they ar SCREAMING!
5 pm Dad appeared on ledge with prey and Koppie was already up there and grabbed - it was just a blurr!
Now the sis with the white hat is eating the bird, Koppie stood aside
WHOA! Koppie nearly went off the side!
