The shimmying is normal, it moves the feathers out of the way so the kids have direct contact to the brood patch which keeps them warm during these first critical days. The closest analogy I can think of this morning is she hears them cry, she responds by trying to keep them warm...kind of like a human would 'rock' a human baby while holding it close to it's body.

I've watched B for all the years she's been here and only remember her doing this while helping an egg hatch. She wiggles all the time, it seems..gives the babies little rest. I went to bed at 11:45 last night, the babies were quiet and there she is, bouncing them all over..waking them up..weird. :egg16: Can't post a pic on here from my iPad but she got her nose poohed on tonight! :eggroll:

DC had been up on the cam for a while but then decided to come down to see his family. He came into the box & Beauty left. These kids are very vocal for as young as they are!

Beauty just returned with food. DC leaves the box & watches from the perch for a while, then hops back into the box & just watches. One chick kept falling over but when it could stand, it got a few bites. I think the reason its falling over is because its crop is so big from a prior feeding!

These kids are all over the place! I'm thinking they're quite strong & healthy to be this active at their young age!

I agree, Kris! There was a discussion about that on chat this morning & how is isn't like Beauty to leave stuff like that in the box. My opinion (for what it's worth) is that it is a backup for when DC gets mad & leaves with the food he's brought--at least she can give the babies a little nibble from that wing! :teehee:

First of all, I know these cams are HD, but they may have a parasite issue

Second problem...I don't how this baby is stuck...if it is..at first I thought a sibling was sitting on a wing...but, when the sibling moved, nothing changed...

Baby is still on its back and DC can't figure out what to do...

We had this same question regarding parasites last year. It's just the high def cams....

I can't figure out how baby got on his back. All are panicked if you ask me. DC isn't sure how to help. Others are anxious and in distress, and so is DC in my opinion.

I think if he can flip baby, it will be okay, but maybe there's something more wrong that we are not aware of...

I agree Carly. I think there's something really wrong here and we just don't know what.

I do think we need to watch for an increase in the "black" areas...DC was really picking at its "armpits" earlier...this is how it started at Blackdog AND redwing...increase of parasites=weaken chicks, spending lots of time on their backs, usually followed by death.....just saying..I watched it both times at those nests.
