VOTE NOW: Name-the-chick finalists!
Here are the choices

•Bertram – In honor Bertram Goodhue, Nebraska State Capitol, Architect.
•Orozco – In honor of Omaha Police officer Kerrie Orozco who was killed in the line of duty in May.
•Sower – The falcon was born and raised in the shadow of our great state’s historical pride of the prairie (the sower atop the Capitol).
•Thunder – In recognition of the stormy spring and the speed at which a Peregrine Falcon is able to fly.
•Uno – The male eyas was the only “one” out of the four eggs to hatch.

I guess he fledged on the 18th but I think it was not intentional, he wasn't very far below the box and made it back up there. Now he is somewhere on the fifth floor of the building where past fledglings have been and made it back up to the top of the building.

From NebraklaLand Nongame Bird Blog

Big Peregrine news gets bigger!

Last week, I blogged about the new Peregrine Falcon nest site at Omaha Public Power District’s (OPPD) at their power station in north Omaha (be sure to check out OPPD’s falcon webpage HERE). There was also a nice story in the Omaha World-Herald. In the post, I stated one of the adults was banded but a photo of sufficient quality allowing the alphanumeric band to be read had not been acquired. Thus, the identity of the bird was unknown. Laura King-Homan of OPPD sent me a photo this morning taken by Andrew Roger which clearly shows the band. The band is black or over red, with the alphanumeric combination “90” over “B”. I did not have to search long and far to figure out the identity of the banded Peregrine Falcon. In fact, I have been in the bird’s company on a previous occasion.

The OPPD bird is “Clark” a male hatched and raised at the Nebraska Capitol in 2012. You may remember this post about Clark’s sibling, Lewis, being observed at the Woodlands, Texas, during the winter of 2014. Read more about Clark and his offspring, on OPPD’s website.

And the Peregrine Falcon’s name is…….

We had a great “name-the-chick” contest this year, with 507 initial suggestions and then 1,560 votes cast to select the winner from five finalists. After the votes were tallied, one name stood out, capturing nearly 80% of all votes cast by the public. The young male Peregrine Falcon hatched and raised at the Capitol in 2015 will, from this point forward, be known as Orozco.

The winning name obviously honors the memory of fallen Omaha Police Officer Kerrie Orozco. The tragedy which occurred on 20 May 2015 in Omaha impacted citizens throughout our state and across our country. It was a privilege to be able to honor Officer Orozco, today, and it was special that our winners included a state senator and an Omaha Police Officer.
