It seems that there is a chance that an Eagle in Fort Meyers that was injured and taken to a rehab might be OZZIE. A lot of chatter on Facebook & social stream about Ozzie not been around since noonish. There is talk that the Eagle has some of the same markings as Ozzie also. :nailbite:

Gosh...I hope not...if it is, I sure hope its not serious...I guess if there is any good news, is that there's only one eaglet and I'm sure mom can handle it, but would prefer to have him by her side..

Gosh, wonder if she has been out looking for him...

I tried to read through some of the comments on FB...about a 50/50 split in terms of viewers thinking it is Ozzie...Wish the news had said when the eagle was picked up. FB is saying he was seen at the nest around 2 pm, bringing in a fish..

AS of right now the eagle that was rescued is missing a talon. They have asked that no one contact CROW , the Pritchetts family will give updates, as soon as they tell them, if it is or not. Nothing more is fact but that.

The eagle @ CROW has a possible left shoulder fracture. It is in stable condition and receiving pain medication and anti-inflammatory. Info is update from CROW, from mod per chat roll.

Currently On The Nest:
CROW confirmed the eagle rescued yesterday did have a missing talon, but cannot confirm that it is Ozzie. SWFEC will share any updates with our viewers. Please do not contact FWC or CROW directly.

It has been difficult to leave site today, not only for hopes of update on Ozzie, but E6 is showing signs that fledge has crossed his mind! :teehee: He has stood @ edges of nest head bobbing and branched to attic for first time. Also, he has ventured further out on veranda. While E6 branched to veranda for his initial branching many days ago, I have never understood his reluctance to branch further out in tree. He has done a lot of wind surfing on loose branches in the nest, however. :teehee: I personally have felt that E6 has shown superior strength during his wingercisings and nest jumpings early on! Expecting a strong first flight from him, just don't know if he'll nail that landing or if a reluctance to explore branching will manifest as a reluctance to explore the world! Love our SWF family!!! :flirty:

From SWFL FB page - Pretty sure it is Ozzie.

"It is extremely likely that the bald eagle brought in yesterday is Ozzie due to the photographs and description sent to us from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam. It has been confirmed that the bald eagle does have a fractured clavicle and will need a few weeks of rehabilitation.

CROW appreciates the support from our SWFEC community and will provide further updates tomorrow on Ozzie's condition.

To better understand Ozzie's injury, I did a little research. Below is a pretty good diagram showing where the 2 clavicles meet in birds. This area is known as the Furcula, or wishbone where the 2 clavicles fuse together.

From Wikipedia:

"The furcula works as a strut between a bird's shoulders, and articulates to each of the bird's scapulae. In conjunction with the coracoid and the scapula, it forms a unique structure called the triosseal canal, which houses a strong tendon that connects the supracoracoideus muscles to the humerus. This system is responsible for lifting the wings during the recovery stroke.[1]

As the thorax is compressed by the flight muscles during downstroke, the upper ends of the furcula spread apart, expanding by as much as 50% of its resting width, and then contracts.[1] X-ray films of starlings in flight have shown that in addition to strengthening the thorax, the furcula acts like a spring in the pectoral girdle during flight. It expands when the wings are pulled downward and snaps back as they are raised. Acting like a spring, the furcula is able to store some of the energy generated by contraction in the breast muscles, expanding the shoulders laterally, and then releasing the energy during upstroke as the furcula snaps back to the normal position. This, in turn, draws the shoulders toward the midline of the body.[2] While the starling has a moderately large and strong furcula for a bird of its size, there are many species where the furcula is completely absent, for instance Australian scrubbirds and bush birds, some toucans and South American barbets, some owls, some parrots, turacos from Africa and mesites of Madagascar. These birds are still fully capable of flying. They also have close relatives where the furcula is vestigal, reduced to a thin strap of ossified ligament, seemingly purposeless. Other species have evolved the furcula in the opposite direction, where it has increased in size and become too stiff or massive to act as a spring. In strong flyers like cranes and falcones, the arms of the furcula are large, hollow and quite rigid.[3]

In birds, the furcula also may aid in respiration by helping to pump air through the air sacs.[1]"

we had one of our female juvenile falcons with this last year and she made a full recovery for release.

I have not been able to come here much today as i was hoping Ozzie would return. Harriet can care for this youngster on her own at this stage but will have to hunt and leave him alone to do that.

Just pray another adult does not try to come in. Not good for all around.

Best thoughts here, and I will make a donation if they have pay pal. It is not that I am rich but I believe in helping facilities that care for nature. All of nature is at our mercy .
