Well I thought there was a chick missing at Valley in yesterdays pictures & darn I was right
Report:
One of the chicks at our Valley Power Plant also has taken flight. There were two chicks born at this site (Wildcat and Rocket). Thursday morning, only one chick remained, resting on the ledge, contemplating whether to follow his brother.
PORT WASHINGTON
Report:
We caught video of one of the Port Washington chicks testing its wings on June 5,
By the next morning, that chick was gone. Three out of four chicks could be seen via webcam in the Port Washington nest box.

Pleasant Prairie nest box update

We are sad to report that at least one of the chicks at our Pleasant Prairie nest box died yesterday. It’s unclear exactly what happened, but Peregrine Manager Greg Septon believes a new adult female may have tried taking over the site.

Peregrines are territorial creatures, and from time to time, new adults will encroach on an established nest box. These turf wars usually occur prior to nesting, but occasionally they happen after young are born. We won’t know with certainty if that’s what happened at this site until Greg can fully investigate.

As part of his classroom instruction on peregrines, Greg always points out that nature is unpredictable. These rare creatures have a high mortality rate: 50 percent do not survive their first year. That’s part of the reason it’s difficult to rebuild this population, which remains an endangered species in Wisconsin. Mother Nature is selective and wants to make sure the strongest survive to pass on those genes.

For now, we are changing one of our live streaming webcasts to show our nest box at Milwaukee County Power Plant. The other shows our chicks at our Oak Creek nest box. Those chicks soon will be fledging -- taking their first flights. Chicks have already fledged at our Valley and Port Washington sites, with our Presque Isle and Milwaukee County chicks a little further behind because they were born later in the season. they have a very weird cam angle at Pleasant Prairie, I wonder if something has happened to the other chicks. It blows they took the live stream off there, and now I see they don't even have as many hourly pictures. I had a bad feeling last night when I saw that picture. Fly high, fast and forever little one :sum7:

So tragic...and such a mystery..a female take over? does that mean there was a fight in the box?

I don't know, but I'm wondering if it wasn't Olivia back. She did seem to like this nest, I wonder if Greg will ever say what happened for sure. They have video of the nest so you would think he could look and see.
I just couldn't stop crying when I read that, specially after I got that picture. it just breaks my heart to look at some of the pictures before that last one, you can see something is wrong with it. :tissue:

Well I'm not sure, but it seems that there was more happening at Pleasant Prairie than they posted about. I did comment and ask for a answer, but who knows how long that will take.
Anyways it looks to be only 1 chick left. I SO hope I'm wrong

Ya know..since they are only showing the ledge at PP its really hard to know what has happened. We see the one chick up there...is it the same chick? Different chick? Are the others in there? Seems odd to be showing the ledge anyway...when you read Greg's blog entry it says..."....at least one..." Does that mean we have more than 1 dead chick in the box?

Well did get a reply, very promptly I may add, and it is what I thought. :tissue:

We hope to learn more about what happened when our peregrine manager is able to fully investigate, however we may never know for sure. Both adults have been seen at the site and appear healthy. The remaining chick (three were lost) also appears healthy. As you may have noticed, it’s growing further into its adult plumage. We are hoping it will fledge soon.

This is just tragic...Now with 3 gone, I have to think Predator maybe (GHO?) Unless they suddenly died and the parents removed them...I hope they are reviewing streaming footage before they switched it over to the hourly pics..Gosh, I hope this last one remains safe!!!
