Situation has not changed: PALATINA arriving daily in late afternoon, waits until dawn, enters nest-box through the bars without problems, leaves nest box and landing-bar outside now at 7.30. PERKEO visits daily landing- bar outside of the nest box, but does not try again to step into the nest box. So we are still waiting that the falcons start their scrapes and courting rituals inside. We were used to see in the last 15 years that the tiercels are the first to do scrapes inside and then "invited" the females with intensive mutual low-bowing and - what we call in German - "Ack-Zick" -ing, then the tiercel leaving the nest box and the female staying behind "cooling" down and inspecting of the ground with her beak, etc.
Now we have here some discussions wether this rituals of both are necessary inside the nest box and when. Now we are early in courting season but we still see a dumb tiercel refusing to enter through the bars. So some say: Remove one of the bars! - But this would be a further invitation for Goosezilla! So if we do that, we have to change the landing-bar outside to make her landing difficult...

I don't know...its still early in the season...Maybe once Perkeo's hormones kick into high gear, his urge to go into the box will increase..He's gotta get up the nerve to do that so he can help with incubation..

Thinking about the Columbus, Ohio nest...Durand (female) barely goes into the box.. Spark goes in all the time but its rare to see her go in there..She'll sit on the ledge, he'll be in the box, calling her...but, she just ignores him...

Maybe give Perfeo a little more time?

Thank you skygirlblue for the information! This morning with freezing fingers in a sharp & icy wind we removed one bar and put it in a horizontal position at a level of 25 cm over wooden entrance. So the falcons - PERKEO go! - can easily hop in and out and can enter with a fat pigeon in their claws when there are juvies.
More important in the moment our removal of the "Kindergarten" - a board between entrance to the nest box and the landing pole.
This board - so show the photos & clips - served GOOSEZILA as a landing-strip and secure standing to enter the nest box. With the new situation she will have to balance on the landing-pole and the barriere-cross will stop her flying or hopping in with the help of her open wings.
So we hope!

Yes! GOOSEZILLA back again yesterday... Obviously without problems entering & leaving the nest box. Now it is the falcons` task to protect their home... :gaaaaah:
