June 12, 2019 in Near the Clock Tower

The Peregrines started this morning off under fair skies, bright sun, calm wind conditions, and temp at 53F. The forecast calls for sunny skies, with a high near 79. Light and variable wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Tonight, partly cloudy, with a low around 52. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight.
The first chick fledged some time last night of first thing this morning….right on schedule! Checked in on the chicks just about 6:30PM through the New Balance Falcon Cam. All three were observed inside the nest box. At 6;30 this morning, only two were left in the box! The first chick has launched into first flight and left the nest box. This cover photo shows the two remaining chicks and this photos shows the three of them together last night. The fledged chick was nowhere to be seen in and around the general area. They do tend to stay very close at first!

Busy day at the nest. These are out of order. Male goes down to the roof again, runs around a bit, and jumps back up the steps, but barely made it today. Female goes down a couple of steps but changes her mind and comes back up and runs down the ledge. Both males play on the ledge and Mom feeds them in the nest. Female returns from her adventure and is back in the nest with her brothers.

Now.

Thanks Kittenface for the info on Lawrence.

When I first logged into the site I saw a notice that one of the chicks flew, according to site.. But I was looking at both of them at the nest, so I watched the video, maybe they meant just flew from one spot on the ledge to the other. Still counts I guess

Later on I saw one juvie on top of the nestbox, then one chick was blown upward while flapping. I also watched a parent having a hard trying to land, so very windy. I sure hope that the juvies don't get hurt.

Mom feeding the boys on the ledge, big girl was there too for a while.

They are all in the nestbox for the night. It would be nice if she didn't fledge until they are ready too.

Not sure how this all started, but guy comes out with one of the boys, holding him up so the parent can see him I guess. Then he sets him down and chick runs up next to the wall, parent is going crazy, the guy opens the door to put the chick back in and the female chick runs out the front. Later here comes the guy with the female chick and places her on the wall.

It's a miracle these two are still on the ledge. I'd have to go back over the tapes to make sure they were not rescued today.
:egg13:

Edit to add a few more pics from earlier

Lots of action today. Not sure about a lot of it, but here's what I saw.

so juvie was running down the ledge, jumping and the wind catching it. Finally it was taken off and went behind the nestbox so I couldn't see where it ended up. Parents seemed to be upset and even looking for it, the way they behave when a human is close by, so I wondered if rescuers had come out to help the juvie. A few minutes later , the other juvie headed down the ledge and went out of sight. They both eventually ended back at the box from the left.

Later, they were flapping excitedly and parent brought food but both raced to her/him and she dropped the prey, but evidently dove and retrieved it as she showed up a couple of seconds later and both juvies again raced back to the nest to get it. The male jumped over the female to get there first and went completely over the ledge (inside). Later, I see him flying back up and makes his way around to get whatever was left of the prey.

Heart stopping.

So today, I believe that the little female fledged fell, was blown off, etc. Also, evidently one on the males was rescued.
Image

Image

It appears she/he kinda of dropped him over the ledge to the roof. I saw a lot of white fluff come off. Nevertheless, he seemed to make it backup to the ledge and box.

I wish there were time stamps on these scenes so that I could arrange the properly. I don't think that the little female is back in the box, so I sure hope that she is ok and is found soon.

Very cute, they do the funniest things sometimes.

Haven't seen the little female in a while, I assume that she either fledged or fell off the ledge. She was not in the box last night. Today I saw people up there returning a chick, but never actually saw it, evidently released on the ledge out of sight. Later I saw one of the males fall off the ledge near the nest box. He didn't look anywhere near developed enough to fledge. Hope they find and return him and I want to see the female back in the box or at least know that she is safe.

That path from the door to the ledge is complicated with walking back and forth instead of straight thru. :sunconfused:

All the while trying to protect yourself from the the parents.

Up early and ready to go.

I believe they both flew, however I'm not sure the female made it back on her own, (don't take my word for it, since I can only see what's on the cam)

What I do know is that they were panning the cam and ended up focused on a piece of equipment at a construction site, and that paticular machine was working at the time. (i'll post pics later, after I find them) It sure looked like a falcon they zoomed on.

Later the female sees a food drop and grabs a tidbit, running back to the nest with it, mantling it when she could. Of course the little male wanted some too, no luck as she then runs out the left side of the nest and then back.

Unbelievably, she sees another food delivery and manages to grab that too. Later, there was some sharing.

After a while, I catch the male flying by the nest. He is pretty good at this now.

Just read on chat that the sweet female at Lowell was found dead, something about hitting a wall. Such a big loss after she was alone for so long, then so kind and caring to her new brothers and loving the company. Heartbreaking really.
Her name was Ursula.

:sorrow: :tissue:

I may take a little break from the falcons.
