Union County: Sad/?? news about Akira from Betty Ann:

Some sad news...Zoologist, Kathy Clark just received a report that BD/73, a female falcon that fledged the Union County nest site in 2018, was apparently injured by a plane propeller at an airport. Her right wing was amputated by the propeller. According to Kathy, "Because she was so calm and easy to handle when rescued, she was nursed back to health and kept in captivity for public education. She's currently in training to stand on the glove for programs." (in Virginia) The incident was reported on January 11, 2019.

I am happy they were able to keep her as an education bird, so this is actually good news..

Jersey City: Looks like nothing was posted about the events of the last two days. Quotes are from Kathy Clark on Nestbox News, Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey Jersey City Falcon Cam YouTube chat:

2019 NestBox News

June 21

As viewers can tell you, a lot has happened since our last update. On June 3, Kathy Clark, Supervisory Zoologist/NJ Fish & Wildlife and CWF visited 101 Hudson St. to band the three 3 week old eyases. All three are females. This is the first successful brood for 41/AX, the nesting female, who has been here since 2015. She is now seven years old and a productive falcon! The three female eyases have been very well cared for since hatching. They have been well fed and brooded closely until they were large enough to keep warm on their own. All three were banded for future tracking: BM/13:1947-31877; BM/17:1947-31881; and BM/18:1947-31882.

All was going very well as they were able to leave and enter the Nestbox to explore the rooftop and building ledge. They could be seen flapping and jumping, all to help strengthen their flight muscles for their first flight when they fledge from the nest. Unfortunately, on Sunday, June 16, starting at approximately 8:45am, window washers entered the rooftop area (41st floor) where the falcon nestbox is located. The eyases (young falcons) were 5-6 weeks old and very close to fledging, so this is a very dangerous time for them to be disturbed. Pushing (by disturbing them) the birds to fledge early can be disastrous. Since they are unable to fly on their own and without much skill, they often land below or another ledge or end up on the streets below.

As soon as the workers entered the area, the adults could be heard calling and dive bombing them, to defend their eyrie (nest) and young. From the human disturbance, two eyases (BM/13 & BM/17) left the ledge on the 41st floor and one remained. At one point viewers noticed the remaining eyas was being sprayed with water from above, which may have been an attempt to drive or push that bird off the ledge, which luckily failed. The workers remained in that area for the majority of the day until we were able to reach engineers for the building to escort them from the area.

Later that day a volunteer nest watcher visited the area and saw one eyas on a lower ledge. On June 18, BM/17 was found on the ground and was captured and transported to The Raptor Trust. On June 21, (***BM/18 was found uninjured on the ground in an alley next to 101 and was returned to the nest box***) BM/13 was (***also***) located and also taken to The Raptor Trust. Currently the one eyas (BM/18) remains near the nestbox/ledge.

This is now a law enforcement issue which is being investigated by NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife. We are deeply saddened by this and will keep you all updated on the status of these majestic birds.

And posted on the Jersey City Falcon Cam Interaction page 6-22-2019 at 1 pm:
BM/13, the falcon missing between Sunday and Friday afternoon, is being evaluated at The Raptor Trust. We know she was being fed by her parents because she's not thin. She'll be x-rayed on Monday to see if there are any injuries.

My note: BM/18 has remained in or very close to the nest box and has received a few food deliveries.

still checking more

at 8:54. on e kid by box on ledge. I saw it walk there; a bit of water spray, came over in from top of box. not much and did not bother kid
9:04am- adults flying gin air, kaking so you knew something was up
9:08am . men on roof. I would think they were alleviating a water problem. we have that under our box at U of A , if it rains a lot. the guys try and put hose over back end out o f sight, to drain water. adults were kaking up a storm. they were on other end of roof.

I just hope the other 2 kids, were not spooked bu tone by box was fine. they did not try and hide anything, I saw closeups fo men and they were just doing what they needed to do.

so hope all is o.k.

Kathy Clark wants video or photos of anything associated with the June 16, 2019 flushing.

BM/13 has been returned to JC!! Kathy just placed her in the nest box with food (maybe quail? That's what the Raptor Trust usually feeds them). 2 food items are in the box (one of which 13 is currently chowing down on), and a 3rd food item is on top of the parapet by the nest box. Bonnie is watching from the street and earlier reported BM 17 & 18 on nearby Plaza 5 with an adult on another nearby building.

And another piece of breaking news, just heard from Bonnie that Cadence was released this morning from the Raptor Trust! She was released at the Trust's location in Millington, NJ: a fair distance west of Elizabeth, and next to the Great Swamp NWR and Lord Stirling Park, which will give her a good hunting ground to start her freedom :hapdance:
