:egg5: Good morning everyone! This is my first posting on this great site. About four months ago I spotted (for the first time) a pair of peregrine falcons here in Boston near our place. I watched them for a week or so and decided to call the Massachusetts department of fish and wildlife and report the pair. Mr Tom French who pretty muuch does all of the falcon banding in MA was extremely happy to hear this news and stated that this pair had not been previously recorded and that this was now the 23 recorded pair of peregrines in Massachusetts.
I got a call from Mr French two weeks ago asking me to meet him and help to locate exactly where the pair had their aerie. We discovered the birds aerie and found two beautiful one week old eyasses in their aerie. I'm now happy to announce that banding (B day) for the two birds has been set for next Tuesday morning. I've posted a few photos of the parents on Facebook on my home page ( David Edward Gates) for anyone who may be interested in seeing them. Here is a short video of Tom French banding some local Peregrines a few weeks ago in Lowell MA. I've been asked to attend the banding next week and if possible I will be posting some pics of the event. Good day to all the bird lovers out there! David Gates. Allston, Ma

This is the short video of Tom French banding some peregrines in Lowell MA a few weeks ago. Enjoy!

The adult male teircel was banded in Manchester a few (5-7?) years ago.I was told that he had taken up residence at the childrens center in Boston two years ago, then the pair disappeared. The female that he is with now is not the same bird from the children center. Supposedly this is the third female he's taken up with since he was banded. I'll find out for sure but I believe the band is black over green with the letters OZ and the number 2.

:egg7: Hello Beth And Susan, The peregrine banding went very smoothly today. Tom French was pretty sure both birds were tiercels, One was bigger than the other but he thinks it's just a really big boy. Tom has banded over 250 peregrin falcon clutches over the years. I have all the banding info for you. It would be much easier for me if you would call me at 1-617-783-4705 anytime is fine. I Spoke with Mr french today and he said he would be glad to help you with any additional banding info. I have his contact when you call. Here's some pics I took. I'm the guy in the blue sweatshirt holding one of the babies. Life doesn't get much better than that! Facebook would not let me put all of the photos on one album for some reason. So here's a few photo links or you can go directly to facebook and look on my homepage ( David Edward Gates) and see the pics that way. Thanks!

It is a tremendous accomplishment to be able to locate a new nesting pair! Congratulations, and you certainly deserved to be at the banding. I'm not sure how many nesting pairs there are in Mass., but not as many as other states. It is wonderful having you here glass kid. We don't have any regular posters from your area that I'm aware of, so hopefully you can educate us on the falcons in the area. Banding falcons has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and hopefully you will have more chances.

It is really helpful to engage some people in the area to watch out for your juveniles when they fledge. There are some pretty big fledge watches that get organized once people in the are aware. Contacting the local press also helps.

Thanks again for the warm welcome everyone,

When I discovered the pair, A rep from Mass wildlife said they were the now the 23rd recorded peregrine pair in MA. I've since been told their might be as many as 28. The more the merrier!

Tom thinks they eyasses are both tiercels. But there is a possibility the bigger one could be a small girl. They were recorded as boys though. I've been going by the aerie site daily and both parents have been quite active with hunting, plucking, stocking up their pantry's and feeding the kids.

The birds are very close to where I live and we have a small but very dedicated group of people from the Eastern Massachusetts Hawk Watch here, plus myself, to keep an eye on the Eyasses when their ready to fledge.

:sum10: Here's the latest update on our Peregrine family here in Allston MA. As you already know our little boy fledged last Thursday. He is now flying like a champ and has been seen chasing pigeons and getting a food handoff from mom and perching high up on the surrounding buildings. This morning around 10am I saw our girl take her first fledge flight. She did one big loop and landed of top of the adjacent buildings roof.
The birds now all have names too. The adult male was already named Zorro He was banded out of aclutch in Manchester NH a few years back. The new female he is now named Elena. Our new baby boy is named Chayton and his sister is Amari. I will try to get some pics ASAP. If only I had a better camera it would be much easier.
