Great pictures, Ethel. As I type this, three chicks are sprawled at the end of the box closest to the cam, and the fourth one is up in the opposite corner. Guess they're looking for their own space. And right after I entered this message, Red Girl arrived with food. Chick #4 finally got out of its corner to get some of the food.

They are all walking around in their own cute way. Nice to have the safe place to do that! Quite warm up there, I'm sure, all though the sun is on the other side of the Bldg. now! Just came thru town. Always look over!

Such great pictures of that feeding from yesterday, MA. At the moment, two sacked out chicks are visible, and the other two in hiding somewhere.

Saw Trinity in the box a little while ago checking on his family. Crimes, those chicks are starting to WALK around in the box. Time goes by too quickly.

There's nothing like Red Girl delivering a snack to get at least a couple of chicks out of their corners.

Well this morning all I can see is a little bit of white, up in the far corner. I guess it is chilly way up there. 60 degrees here at the house.

Up in that corner again. Every year this occurs. At least they are consistent! LOL!

Bird Anatomy, Peregrines
Pin-Feathers
New feathers are called pin-feathers because they?re covered in a sheath that makes them look pin-like.

When pin-feathers are quite small they have a blood vein inside that makes them sensitive to touch. As the feather grows the blood vein recedes, the feather barbs emerge from the sheath (indicated by the red arrow) and the feather is no longer senstive to touch. The sheaths dry out and fall off, a process the bird helps along by preening.

Molting makes birds feel a little itchy so they enjoy preening and bathing while they?re losing their old feathers and growing new ones.

So that?s why the nestlings are grooming a lot, removing the lose downy feathers and preening the new ones.
And that?s why they stand out in the rain. ?Ahhhh! That feels good.?
Soon they?ll be covered in brown and cream feathers. You?ll be amazed at how fast this happens.

Trinity was just in the box a bit ago checking on his family. All four chicks are visible at the moment, although two of them are sort of in hiding.

Where have all the chicks gone?

I just checked the nest and found it empty. Then I checked the Wilmington Falcons Facebook page and saw a post that the chicks are being banded today, so I assume they're all out getting their "bling." (Unfortunately, I need to leave for several hours so I won't see them when they're returned to the nest.)

From the scruffy head, it looks as if Trinity was the one doing the feeding just now.

So far, I've only been able to see one band on the chicks. The chick at the upper right was kind enough to stick out a leg with a red band on it. I'm hoping that later the Facebook page will provide more information on yesterday's banding (e.g., sexes of the chicks, band colors).

From the Facebook page: Two of the chicks were identified as males and two as females during yesterday's banding.

And from the nest box earlier today . . .
