I was so eager for them to band
but now that 2 of them are this mobile
Im concerned they'd run over the edge

I dont know if ChesCon is as irresponsible as I think they are or not

I'm beginning to wonder about banding now too... I definitely wouldn't hold Chesapeake Conservancy responsible - this is an educational endeavor for them (and to raise awareness and $$$).

Who (what?) is 'in charge' of banding? FWS? DNR?
(I asked 'when are the chicks going to be banded' on FaceBook a few days ago - and I guess my question got lost... I'll ask again.)

Banding is a decision of the state/region DNR..thus falling under the control of the State, ie Maryland. Chesapeake Conservancy may not have any say so in the matter other than requesting banding and then making arrangements for access. I think they work in conjunction with US Fish and Wildlife, but I don't think they are a part of it..I'd have to research that. (Its kinda like Ohio deciding that 2015 is the last year for banding. That wasn't a Fed mandate.)

From what I understand, ideal banding age is 21-24 days...maybe others have heard something different. I don't think they are too old, yet...they aren't mobile enough, yet, to outrun a human and are still at that age when they would probably "freeze" if there was danger (human) on the ledge.

My guess (if banding is still a go) is that Craig can't get there because of bandings elsewhere...but, that's just my theory!!

yes, 21 days is whatthey like to earmark as youngest. unless it cannot be helped. you get a better idea of sex and yes, they still freeze.

they are probably pretty busy banding. I thought they had a date set and were ready to go. my error.
we had to band ours later last year and were just lucky, they still froze

sky, I understand WHO bands -
my complaint with Ches is that they alone are responsible for informing fb and cam.
They dont answer fb Qs
They dont inform when they'll band
They dont appear to have a commitment to us - LOL!
And they dont seem to know falcons at all :tantrum2:

Fargo Audubon had to postpose banding as banders couldnt make it.
But they informed us.

They (Ches Cons) definitely know more about Osprey - so if FWS is responsible, that would be Craig... and I've contacted him a couple of times (more recently about an O nest I'm watching); I'm under the impression that he's busy banding all over the place - but haven't heard back from him yet.
If 24 days old is optimum... we're still o.k. - but it's getting close....

June 11, 2015 Thursday Shepnotes
code Orange air quality alert Thursday
5.45 am Boh lands on ledge panting with BIG prey. Falcons are fast but hunting n hauling big prey to nest is hard work.
Then their hard-won meal is given to their young. Boh feeds kids, no sign of Barb2
I think bad air quality affects birds too.
6.30 Barb2 came with prey and fed all 3 kids again.
DONT WORRY about 01 - she's over the wall behind cam

Falcons are such patriotic Americans!
Their eggs are red, their chicks are white - and the parents are blue!

bon - yer right about - 'grabbed' :egglaugh:

I certainly understand your frustration..its the nature of the beast and this is why I really don't like FB for such things as this. I'm having the same problems getting questions answered with other nests that have FB pages...that's why I switched to messages and emails. Unless a FB page is only dedicated to one nest, everything gets lost. When we set up the Richmond eagles FB page several years ago, we made sure that the eagles were the main focus. Not osprey, Not Centers for Conservation Biology, etc. Then we made sure that we had volunteers whose job was to check that page continuously and answer questions when they could. The biologists (Libby and others) and CCB rarely visited that page...they didn't have time..

They can't inform about banding if they don't know...

I'm equally frustrated...but I can't equate the lack of information to apathy toward the falcons..

I'll send them another message...

Just posted on their FB page....Banding is today...

Good morning! It's a big day for the eyasses (baby peregrine falcons). We have been notified that the raptor biologist from the US Fish & Wildlife Chesapeake Bay Field Office plans to band them today!

The cam may be offline for a bit this morning to accommodate the biologist who needs to do his work in a very confined space.
