5.30 pm Barb has been in nest n on ledge for maybe an hour.
One of the kids came bounding along ledge to her and she ran into nest
2nd kid came bounding along the roof to her - she ran under bridge
WHY would Mom run away from her kids. Very strange. Was it Barb? I think so
The traffic copter just went by. So funny to see it at eye level!

FROM FB:

Chesapeake Conservancy
22 mins ·
We wanted to share an update about the falcon naming contest results (Cade, Koppie, and Burnham "Burnsie").
We've received very gracious notes from Dr. Cade The Peregrine Fund and Mr. Craig Koppie Chesapeake Bay Field Office. We understand that Mr. Burnham's family has been notified as well.
The gentlemen expressed their deep appreciation of this great honor.
Here at the Chesapeake Conservancy, we're thrilled with such a meaningful tribute to a few of the conservationists whose life's work saved this majestic bird from near eradication. Thank you to everyone who voted!

What a nice honor for Craig and Tom Cade is a God in the falcon world, nice to see them honor these folks.

Here's why...

Around 4 pm, there was a food drop (which I missed)

Image

Then a little play/pounce before eating..

Then a little while later, Barb returns, grabs some of the leftovers, takes them to the nest tray and eats..

Image

Image

When she finished, she perched for a while on the lip of the tray, then up to the table/ledge thingy...I had to leave at 5 and that's where she was when I left..

Not unusual for the adults, especially the males, to run from the kids. Even an almost ready to fledge female can injure an adult, especially a male..not on purpose, of course..but when ya have a screaming kid running toward you, its best to move. Durand (female at Columbus) usually stands her ground, but Spark? LOL...man, he can't get outta there fast enough...

Thank you sky for the videos and the explanation.
I am tempted to call it - PRONKING - when the juvies hop along like a sparrow does instead of run.
Lil one appears to be playing with something.
I knew parents dropt food and fled at this stage - lol -
but it was Barbs expression which confused me.
You know how she GLARES at the cam? It was like that.
She has learned a lot her first year as a Mom. I'm proud of her
but - she is still a weird bird. Boh learned a lot too! Bless his heart.
I suppose next she'll bring them a live bird. That happened at Notts and GSB

I think the adults purposely get the kids to chase them in preparation for fledging. Once they can pretty much feed themselves, the Harrisburg parents start training the kids to chase them. I think its either a matter of when they chase a parent off the ledge, they might have so much speed in play that they will run/fly off the ledge, or they will fly after a parent when a parent flies by with food. It happens at all the peregrine nests to varying degrees. COL was an exception this year. Dorothy was seen perching next to her baby at fledge time. Which makes me think that she really didn't want him to fledge yet because she knew he wasn't ready. Just my 2 cents worth... :teehee:

Koppie, Cadey the youngest girl and Burnsie

5.15 am I watched first light push the darkness s l o w l y off over the nest and roof
5.16 I see the dark shadow of huge wings flapping over the curb - its both beautiful and spooky!
At least one spent the night in the nest. No IR here - I seen 3 outlines under far end of bridge
5.20 Burnsie flapping very hard perched on curb. Why Burnsie? - white hat!
5.21 Koppie stretched standing up in doorway, looking, UP he goes on bridge
5.22 Koppie and Burnsie on bridge - she flew up from the curb
5.27 Burnsie hops down in to nest. She'd run down to the other end of bridge and back, surveying Baltimore
6.50 Koppie on bridge is still workin on a whole bird that was dropt off - I missed the drop off
7 am Koppie watchs the sky, sis watchs Koppie as he keeps workin on de-feathering prey
7.15 am The boy gave up on the bird. There it lies and he left it. He did a good job for a juvie.

bonbon - The times are for you to plan being there. Got an alarm clock? :girlcrazy:
Thank you Cat - thats helpful. Bill me for the 2 cents. fascinating birds.

Thank you all for the great pics and videos!
When do you think I should start going down there? I'm planning on shooting for 5am (no traffic and shouldn't be a problem parking). Don't you wish we had ESP? (Probably wouldn't remember anyway! :teehee: ) I hope there are others there - so that we have an idea of where they usually land! (I wonder if Craig ever goes??? Or if he knows???)
I was down there a couple of weeks ago - and I could see NOTHING when standing in front of the building on the ground!
Any ideas???
(Remember - I am a TOTAL NOVICE! I hope I recognize them when I see them! What if I see a pigeon and think - "Oh there's a chick!!!! :girlcrazy: )

This is a site I found that I've been studying for 'rooftops!' (Beautiful pictures!)

Oh...it would be so nice to have ESP..

When should you go? NOW..

Their ages: 40, 39, 38 days old Males can start fledging at day 38. Day 42/43 (or later) is ideal for the females, but they don't always read the rule book. Most fledges occur before noon, but that's not written in stone!!

Mistaking a crow/hawk/pigeon for a falcon? Yep..been there, done that..that's why its good if you can see them come off the ledge..that way you can track their movement and location. Hopefully, when they fledge, they will make it to a neighboring building ledge or roof. Most of the time, they will go down or straight, rarely up. They don't have the wing strength yet. If a parent is close by, they may follow.

Always carry emergency numbers in case one of them grounds. If all else fails, the police. I have GA DNR in my phone as well as Atlanta Animal Control. I've never looked on the cam page to see if there are numbers.

I'm sure there are others who have done this a lot more than me who can give you more tips!!

I'll shoot for tomorrow between 5-6am - Rain is forecast for today, tomorrow and Sunday... does that matter? Will they still fledge if it's raining? :egg16:

Rain is good..Hard for a wet falcon to fly for the first time. When they have to do rescues at Harrisburg (and maybe other places too) sometimes they will wet them down after they put them back on the roof...not only does it cool them off, but I think the theory is it slows them down so they don't fly immediately after the roof return..at least that's what I read..LOL
