June 27, 2015 RAIN, WINDY Saddaday Shepnotes
4.45 am It is dark and rainy, but I see the ghostly flapping of wings. bon/bcaw is going downtown to fledge watch.
5.20 am Still too dark to see - I think I see bonbon down there! Outline of one chick perched on curb.
5.30 am I can now see 3 outlines - 1 under bridge 3/4 of the way down, 2 in nest, 1 flapping hard
- Ah - Koppie flew to ledge and flapped so hard I thot he'd take off.
- (Imagining him flying right into bon's arms. OK - not gonna happen - lol )
5.34 am Koppie at far end of bridge wings spread - sis on roof wings spread -lol - a wind gust cud take kop off.

That is the last I saw Koppie - hiding? or fledged? :egg16:

5.40 - There was a prey drop on the ledge, and I didnt see it. One young has it and is defeathering it
- White hat sis appears to be eating something just below cam on black rooftop for past half hour
- Only seeing 2 now
Boh and Barb hunt before dawn - wow - 2 chicks have prey - 6 am I still dont see #3
6.40 am OK I can finally identify the 2 sisters - so its Koppie who is not on cam. Did he go off? Very windy.

:wave

Well........ went downtown and it was still too dark! Drove around the block a couple of times and came home... pouring rain! Didn't see anyone hanging around... I think it was too early, and it was too dark (because of the weather (??)) Should see sun tomorrow - so will try again! :hapdance:

(Now I know that I can get there in a flash! (and car has all the stuff!!!) ) So, if anything happens - I can zip down there again ...if the old nerves hold up!! :girlcrazy: )

Do you think they were fed a big (bigger than usual) meal this morning to keep them from fledging? When I saw all that food this morning - that's what I thought (esp when I heard the forecast!)....?????

Its entirely possible. I've seen eagle parents do that!! I think they feel the changes in the barometric pressure and adjust accordingly. I've seen Boh come back several times already this morning...Barb may have been back too!!

Of course, who knows what they will do when they get a burst of energy...combined with the wind..fledge is so hard to predict most of the time..

I have not been here in a bit due to my stuff but wow.
they are ready already :egg13:
Main thing is to make sure you know who to call. Take a big towel or tablecloth with you. A box ( a cat carrier box works well) . If you feel it is in danger, you approach slowly and quickly throw cloth over. Take gloves. the thing about picking them up is their wings ,fold them down , in a downward motion , as you pick up and place them in box . the cat carrier boxes have a handle. you never want to use a cage. the wire wrecks their wings. you can spray them with a little water.
if you are going to just watch it and keep safe:
phone your number right away, and keep young one safe. slowly approach if necessary, and try to keep it backed against something. keeping people away is key. They do more harm than good. Do not take pictures it scares them. save those for when they are rescued.
If you loose track of one after it fledges. watch parents. and listen. when it is hungry it will call.
I am thinking positive things here. hopefully there are some who are watching them

:flirty:
Thank you all so much!!! (of all the people here - the 'dumb one from Maryland' is going to the site!!!) :teehee:
Another question - Do the chicks EVER fledge successfully? I mean fly off, land on a roof somewhere, then return to the nest??? Do they ever fledge all together... like 'follow the leader?' (Oh Jeeeeeeeze.....)
(I haven't been able to watch - but everytime I've checked... the nest has been empty! ...and the sky is getting very, very dark at an Osprey nest in Baltimore that I watch!)

the males will fledge first at usually 38days on upward. They are very successful .Females will hopefully fledge at around 42 days. We hope for them to wait longer. But there is always the accidental fledges. Females , being bigger and heavier, have the hardest time , but depending on your sites , you could have no problems at all. It is not all bad, I am just prepared for the good and oopsies. We have had times where we have not had to do a rescue. the more ledges in area, the less windows, the better
