From Dyfi FB page:
Dyfi Osprey Project

19 mins ·
At just before midnight young Ceri lost her battle for life.

She was standing tall facing the wind for much of the evening and appeared to be getting stronger when she suddenly seemed to make a turn, raised her tail in the air and stopped breathing.

We'll have to wait and see what will happen to Ceri's body - Glesni will probably remove it eventually once the filial bond between them breaks down. We've seen chicks die in the nest before in the 13 years ospreys have again started to breed in Wales, but it does not get any easier. In fact, probably the opposite is true. You appreciate more just how valuable a life like this is.

We would like to extend our gratitude to all of you for your support over the last few days; our hearts go out to all our volunteers who have worked so tirelessly to make sure Ceri made it to this world.

Ceri dies at eight weeks and one day old and now all of our attention is focused on her brother, Tegid. Let's hope he beats the odds and is one of the 30% of ospreys that survive and return to the UK to breed in a few years time.

It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all they say. It hurts like crazy though.

Rest in peace dear friend

Here's a link to the blog that tells the story. Very sad.

Beautifully written blog by Ems.

Can't imagine how difficult this is for the DOP. As someone who only reads the blog (which always has such great osprey info) and occasionally watched the live stream, this young osprey's death hit me like a ton of bricks.
It's funny how we can watch some nests for a few minutes and skip right over to the next, when others grab our attention (and affection).

Dyfi, Wales: This morning we have taken the decision to remove Ceri's body from the nest.

Yesterday we spoke with other osprey colleagues in the UK and based on their advice and the following developments, we have taken this decision.

1. Neither Glesni nor Monty have been seen to show any inclination to remove the body - it is probably too heavy at almost 2Kgs.

2. As the body decomposes, it poses a contagion risk to the other ospreys, especially Tegid who eats his food practically touching the body.

3. Tegid has been on the wing for five days now - he is a strong flier. We've seen him soaring high on extended flights, landing on far away perches on the marsh and yesterday he had a dip in the Dyfi River.

We now feel the time is right to remove Ceri as the balance of risks have tilted. The risks of Tegid grounding himself on the marsh are very low, whereas the risks of leaving the body in the nest are becoming greater.

Thanks, Ferenz. Sounds like a good decision IMO. We surely don't want any osprey getting sick, and it'll be good to know what actually caused Ceri's death.

20/07/2016 - Great news from the nest!

At 10:35 this morning W7 took to the wing for the first time.

Reports from the protection site say that she was soon joined by both Mrs G and Aran giving a fantastic display with all three of them flying in loose formation around the nest.

W7’s maiden flight lasted 2 minutes and 13 seconds in total.

In recent hours W8 has been making some great efforts at following his big sister by helicoptering high above the nest – it may not be long now before he too takes flight!

Will he? Won't he? The anticipation has been building up all day at Glaslyn. W8 has been close several times to taking the plunge today. Bouts of serious helicoptering, interspersed with long periods on the nest rim have kept us all on the edge of our seats for hours on end. He's currently having a lie down and thinking about it! Typical man!

Posted on FB approx. 3:11pm:
Evening everyone
It's been a long day at DOP and an emotional one obviously.
We removed Ceri's body from the nest at 08:55 this morning. We were at the nest for 14 minutes and Tegid was away for just over an hour.
Ceri looked in extremely good condition - she certainly didn't die of starvation. We took Ceri to Cambrian Veterinary Centre and this afternoon they examined and X-Rayed her. As we thought, Ceri had no broken bones.
The Veterinary Centre is closed now, but on Monday we will pick Ceri's body up and bury her on Cors Dyfi reserve. We will also get the full report from the vet guys and we'll publish this in full as soon as we can next week.
We all feel this evening as if we have a small degree of closure - we hope you do too.

Blog on Monday but for now - here's Tegid returning to his nest at 09:49 this morning. He's a strong lad and he has five or six more weeks with us to fly and eat as much as he can before his long journey.

After some exploratory trips along the perch over the last 24 hours,
we're pleased to confirm that W8 finally fledged successfully at 16:23hrs this afternoon.

Here's a short video of him taking flight outside the nest for the first time...

Glaslyn, Wales: 04/08/2016 - Thoughts on intervention…

We don’t have the faintest idea what happened to W7 to cause her injury. All we know is that she landed on the nest at 3pm last Thursday (28th July) and her right leg was not in a good way. We’ve seen her come and go over the past few days and now that she could be eating away from the nest it’s difficult to know how much food she’s taking on board. We do know that when she’s tried to eat on the nest we’ve seen her take less food than her sibling because she’s not as able to manoeuvre herself into a position to receive it from Mrs G. We can also see that when Aran leaves a fish on the nest she’s struggled to use her right talon to hold onto it. For many of us this is difficult to watch because we all know that she’s going to need food to recover from her injury and build up her strength for the long migration South in 4 – 5 weeks.

Seeing her struggle to eat is heart-wrenching, and these strong emotions can build to a point where we feel we have to do something about it. However, there are countless practical, ethical and legal reasons why we can’t launch into action and rescue an injured wild bird while it’s still on the nest. This is why we do not intend to intervene with W7 unless she falls to the ground and is not able to take-off. You see, it’s ok for W7 to injure herself and perhaps die in the process. But what’s not ok is for us to intervene and injure or kill her. Not only do we not want to do that, but it would pose some serious questions for an organisation responsible for protecting these wild birds.
