Looking at the beeks on the chicks, one is clearly female and one male, cant see all 3 clearly enuf to be sure about #3. If they ever leave the corner, their plumage and tails will tell us a lot.
Diamond and Xavier are doing a lot of mating. I really hope she doesnt lay another egg.

Xavier goes fishing

Xavier has brought in a water bird chick; not sure of the species – interesting catch.
I’m a little bit worried about the length of time the nest is being left empty. I’m sure that is quite unusual. I can only assume that Xavier is not really pulling his weight yet and Diamond is still doing quite a bit of the hunting. I hope that he gets his act together before the birds get much bigger (and hungrier)

From the viewpoint of science, it would be interesting to see what happens, if there still would be eggs.
Was there a situation like this ever before? I don't know, maybe Bev knows it.

How long does it take to get eggs after mating? From Froona's website:

Quote:
With an interval of 48 to 72 hours to be offshoots to 120 hours the eggs of peregrine brood are produced.

We will see what happens next week.

She can't breed the eggs, because the chicks need attention too. So the eggs will not survive, that's what I think.
So it's better not to have eggs, but you can't stop nature. :fangirl:

Thanks Arjen - NONE of us would welcome another egg -
but I remember Hope in Pa last year laid an egg after her mate was killed.
only 1 chick survived of 4 eggs

I would not expect an egg this late in season for them.

I would think this is mere bonding for the male. We do not know if this happened at demortel ,as they could copulate away from box.

after mating, anegg would be produced about 14 days

this is a quote

In other words: Mating starts a few weeks before laying and continues through the process, up to several times an hour. Fertilization of an egg happens every 48 hours. After being fertilized, it takes an egg 24 hours to develop and be laid... resulting in a new egg being laid every 48 hours.

(what happened at Pittsburgh, Shep, was different. Chicks were not born yet, and the first 3 eggs were not fully incubated, when she laid third egg. full incubation did not start till after that last egg was laid, )

But one thing I have learned about falcons over the years , and what our biologist has told me., Just when you think you have them figured out, they do something out of pattern and we learn something else.

I also would not worry about time adults are away from chicks. One will be close by, the chicks are old enough and it is not cold. I see the adults fly to the trees to right a lot and it takes them seconds to get back to box. And I would also think one is just outside the box. Because Diamond is doing all of the care, she needs some time to hunt and fly.
And I think Xavier is doing his share. his just guarding is great but he is bringing in prey also, whether he hunted it or not.

missed catching it but I know arjen will, the little bum, mated again. He is really aggressive. He just flew from the ledge and Bam. someone is going to get hurt yet. this is something I have not seen before. this type of aggression. maybe it just looks aggressive as I am used to seeing female standing stooped over.
Still there are chicks there.

bev, Im glad you said something.
When I saw him on her as she was on the chicks I was just disgusted.
He doesnt seem normal
I really dont imagine Diamond is real thrilled with him and his behaviours.
He brings prey but doesnt give it up willingly

I saw one of the chicks barf up a pellet - onto another chick
eewww
