The nuptial flight is the mating season for birds. At this time, the young choose a mate, build a nest and begin their honeymoon. According to observations, during this time the pairs return to their previous nest, occupy it and signal that this is their home, their future breeding place. The MAVIR nesting box has been inhabited by a hen and her female, called Csenge by onlookers, for more than 10 years. This time, however, a different pair has arrived at the artificial nest. Who could they be? Together with our experts, we are already investigating the identity of the birds pictured to find out who the new inhabitants of the nest could be.
We can assume that Csenge, who wears two rings on her leg, has not yet returned, as one of the two currently occupying the nest has a ring and the other has no visible ring. We have received several inquiries about Csenge from our observers. Csenge has not been able to breed successfully in the last three years and has not even laid any eggs recently. Experts estimate his age to be at least 18 years. This makes him the oldest shrike observed as part of our nest monitoring program. It was foreseeable that the day would come when he would not return.
I'm not sure if that time has come yet. We are at the beginning of the breeding season, he could emerge at any time, however due to his age it is possible that we are only seeing the archive in our recordings.
